INJURIES

Can't shut door in 10th Finnegan (4-5) took the loss Wednesday as the Nationals were downed 4-3 by the Marlins, recording one out and giving up an unearned run on one hit and two walks in the 10th inning.
Impact The 29-year-old was essentially victim of the phantom runner rule in extra innings -- after Lewis Brinson laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Jesus Sanchez to third base to open the bottom of the 10th, Finnegan issued two intentional walks to load the bases only to give up a walkoff single to Jose Alfaro. The right-hander has only allowed one earned run in nine August innings, picking up three saves on four chances plus a win and a hold on the month, but he also has three losses and Finnegan's 5:4 K:BB and five unearned runs are red flags that he's been more lucky than good as the Nats' closer.

Earns save No. 5 Finnegan walked and struck out a batter while throwing a scoreless ninth frame to pick up his fifth save of the year in a 4-1 win over the Brewers on Friday.
Impact Finnegan had to work around a leadoff walk and was able to retire the next three batters he faced to secure the save. The 29-year-old has picked up all five of his saves since July 29 and owns a 0.93 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 5:2 K:BB over 9.2 innings since then. Although the Nationals are in tank mode, Finnegan could be worth a stash in deeper fantasy leagues while he's picking up save opportunities.

Notches fourth save Finnegan gave up a hit and struck out one over 1.1 scoreless innings to record his fourth save of the season in Wednesday's 8-5 win over the Blue Jays.
Impact The right-hander continues to thrive in a high-leverage role for the Nats. Finnegan has allowed only one earned run over his last 14 appearances and 14.1 innings, and since Brad Hand was dealt to Toronto just before the trade deadline, he's converted four of five save chances.

Takes loss in relief Thursday Finnegan (4-4) was tagged with the loss Thursday against the Mets after allowing one run on one hit across one-third of an inning.
Impact Finnegan had the task of sending the game to extra innings after the Nationals rallied to score three runs in the top of the ninth, but he allowed a walkoff homer to Pete Alonso with one out. This ended Finnegan's run of 10 straight appearances without allowing an earned run, though his role as the team's closer shouldn't be in jeopardy going forward.

Wraps up third save Finnegan earned the save against the Braves on Saturday as the result of pitching a perfect ninth inning.
Impact The right-hander blew his previous save chance in ugly fashion, but he was right back on the bump with Washington protecting a one-run lead in the ninth inning Saturday. Finnegan had no problem taking care of business, retiring the side in order on just 12 pitches. The strong outing should strengthen his stranglehold on the closer job for the Nationals. Finnegan has three saves and one win in addition to the blown save over his past five appearances.

Adams' first career HR in 9th lifts Nats past Braves, 3-2

Riley Adams’ two-run homer in the ninth inning gave Washington the lead and the Nationals rallied with three runs off Atlanta closer Will Smith, beating the Braves 3-2

Falters in save chance Finnegan (4-3) allowed four unearned runs in a blown save and loss against the Phillies on Thursday, yielding three hits and a walk with one strikeout.
Impact Finnegan came on in the ninth inning to protect a 5-3 lead but the first two hitters reached on a double and throwing error, respectively. After retiring the next two hitters, Finnegan gave up two-run doubles to J.T. Realmuto and Rhys Hoskins for his first blown save since taking over closer duties last week. Finnegan had put together eight straight scoreless outings prior to Thursday, so his role likely remains secure for the time being, but his 1.48 WHIP in 44 innings could be a harbinger of more volatility going forward.

Picks up relief win Finnegan (4-2) earned the win in relief Sunday against the Cubs after pitching a scoreless inning.
Impact Finnegan tossed a scoreless frame in the top of the ninth and only needed 15 pitches to get the job done, extending his streak of scoreless appearances to eight in a row. The right-hander, who's expected to work as the Nationals' primary closer following the departures of Brad Hand and Daniel Hudson (COVID-19 protocols), has been pitching well over the last few weeks and owns a 1.42 ERA across 12 appearances (12.2 innings) since the beginning of July.

Picks up second save Finnegan allowed one hit and no walks in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save against the Cubs on Friday.
Impact Finnegan has taken on ninth-inning duties after Brad Hand and Daniel Hudson (COVID-19 protocols) were traded away, and he's converted on a pair of save chances across the last two days. The right-hander allowed two runs in his first appearance after the All-Star break, but he's now tossed 7.2 scoreless innings in his last seven outings and should be considered the favorite for save opportunities.

Tallies first save Finnegan struck out two and did not allow a baserunner in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save Thursday in the first game of a doubleheader against the Phillies.
Impact Finnegan was thrust into the closer's role with Brad Hand and Daniel Hudson (COVID-19 protocols) traded Thursday. He had little trouble shutting down the Phillies, as he needed only 12 pitches to record his first career save. With Hand and Hudson out of the picture, Finnegan could be in the position to see save opportunities across the final two months of the campaign.

Earns win in relief Finnegan (4-2) earned the win Tuesday against the Yankees after pitching a scoreless inning in relief.
Impact Finnegan entered the game in the seventh inning and was both effective and dominant, needing just seven pitches (six strikes) to retire the side even though he didn't record a single strikeout. The right-hander bounced back from an ugly outing against the Padres last week, but it's worth noting he has six scoreless appearances over his last seven trips to the mound. He owns a 3.82 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP across 35.1 innings on the season.

Back from injured list Finnegan (hamstring) was activated from the 10-day injured list Tuesday, Matt Weyrich of NBC Sports Washington reports.
Impact The right-hander threw a simulated game over the weekend, so he'll make his return from the injured list without heading to the minors for a rehab assignment. Finnegan has seven holds with a 3.86 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 36:17 K:BB across 30.1 innings this season.
