Approaching rehab assignment
Pirates general manager Ben Cherington said Sunday that he expects Griffin (forearm) to play in minor-league rehab games by the end of the week, "barring something unforeseen," Col...
Impact
Griffin has been conducting his rehab in Florida since landing on the shelf May 31 due to a right forearm strain, but he's expected to head north to Pittsburgh for an evaluation early in the week before then linking up with a minor-league affiliate. Throwing at full strength and velocity seems to be the biggest concern for Griffin as he works his way back from the injury, and the rookie phenom appears to be making strong progress on that front. Per MLB.com, Pirates manager Don Kelly said Saturday that Griffin has extended his throwing distance to 150 feet and was clocked at 89 mph while throwing from third base to first.

Increases throwing distance
Griffin (forearm) threw from 150 feet with no pain Friday, MLB.com reports.
Impact
Griffin has been rehabbing in Florida for roughly the last week and has increased his throwing distance from 90 to 150 feet in that span. He's expected to return in late June, but he will still likely need to embark on a rehab assignment before being activated.

Continuing rehab in Florida
Griffin will report to the Pirates' facility in Bradenton, Fla. during the upcoming week to continue rehab for his right forearm strain, Aidan Stepansky of MLB.com reports.
Impact
Griffin began playing catch out to 90 feet Wednesday and is expected to gradually increase the distance and intensity of his throwing while he's out in Florida. The standout rookie has been on the shelf since May 31 but could have a realistic shot at returning to action for the Pirates before the end of June, depending on how quickly he's able to resume full baseball activities.

Throws from 90 feet Wednesday
Griffin (elbow) did some flat-ground throwing from out to 90 feet Wednesday and felt fine, Jose Negron of DK Pittsburgh Sports reports.
Impact
It's the first bit of throwing Griffin has done since he landed on the 10-day injured list at the end of May with a flexor strain in his right elbow. He also took part in fielding drills without throwing, which is something the rookie has done since first going on the IL. There remains no timetable for Griffin's return to the Pirates' active roster, but there should be more clarity on that front as he continues to ramp up his throwing.

Set to resume throwing Wednesday
Griffin (elbow) is scheduled to resume throwing Wednesday, Jason Mackey of MLB.com reports.
Impact
Griffin will do some light throwing Wednesday as he begins a throwing progression. The rookie is coming back from a flexor strain in his right elbow and the Pirates have refrained from offering a timeline for Griffin's return to the active roster. It's not clear whether the team is considering bringing Griffin back sooner to serve only as a designated hitter initially.

Pirates general manager Ben Cherington relayed Sunday that Griffin is looking at a "more relaxed timeline" in his recovery from a flexor strain in his right elbow, Jason Mackey of...
Impact
Cherington didn't offer an exact timeline for Griffin, but the former noted that the 20-year-old shortstop is looking at a longer stint on the 10-day injured list after more exams by team doctors. Griffin has yet to start throwing but has been taking ground balls, and the Pirates should have a better sense of Griffin's recovery timeline once he's cleared to play catch.
