Cleans mess in win Ginkel retired both batters faced in the eighth inning of Thursday's 2-1 win over the Rockies.
Impact Much of the focus after the win was on the sterling performance of starter Eduardo Rodriguez and Corbin Carroll's walk-off single, but Ginkel made it possible. With one out in the eighth inning, Juan Morillo hit a batter with the bases loaded that tied the game. Enter Ginkel, who induced a pop-out to the catcher and a groundout to third base to limit the damage. It was the reliever's eighth scoreless outing over his last nine appearances, during which the right-hander has allowed four hits, two walks while striking out nine over 7.1 innings. With Paul Sewald holding down the closer job, there isn't much opportunity for Ginkel to pick up saves, but his 3.20 ERA in 2026 is making last season (7.36) look like an outlier.

Rocky appearance Ginkel pitched one inning allowing a solo home run in a 12-7 win over San Diego on Sunday.
Impact Ginkel entered the game in the sixth inning and gave up a home run to Luis Campusano which gave the Padres a 7-1 lead at the time. The right-hander was able to limit the damage at just one before Arizona scored 11 unanswered runs. The 32-year-old had previously gone seven of his last eight appearances not allowing an earned run. This was Ginkel's first home run allowed through 12 outings to date.

Takes loss Friday Ginkel (0-1) allowed one run on two hits over one inning, picking up the loss in Friday's game against the Dodgers.
Impact Ginkel was handed a tough assignment in his first appearance of the season, entering a tie game with a switch hitter and two lefties due up. The Diamondbacks have an all-righty bullpen, and manager Torey Lovullo tabbed Ginkel is one of the relievers designated to get lefties. He gave up a leadoff double to Alex Freeland and a run-scoring single by Kyle Tucker two batters later. Ginkel will be part of a late-game crew along with Ryan Thompson, who pitched the seventh inning Friday, and Paul Sewald, who has yet to pitch.

Tucker's 8th-inning single lifts Dodgers past Diamondbacks 5-4 on World Series ring night

Role clarified Ginkel will be one of two right-handed relievers that will be counted on to get lefty hitters out, Michael Reynolds of MLB.com reports. Juan Morillo is the other.
Impact As it stands a few days before Opening Day, the Diamondbacks bullpen is made up of all right-handers. As such, Ginkel and Morillo are charged with getting tough lefties out. Ginkel's career splits are neutral (.312 OBP vs. RHH, .311 vs. LHH), but he fared better against lefties than righties in 2025, when he had a 90 OPS+ against them compared to 137 OPS+ when facing righties. Being designated to such a role, in which he could be needed for a high-leverage situation in the seventh or eighth innings, could impact his save opportunities. Arizona doesn't have a set closer, and Ginkel is expected to be part of a committee that also includes Paul Sewald and Ryan Thompson.

Makes spring debut Ginkel allowed two hits and struck out two over a scoreless inning in Sunday's spring game against Cleveland.
Impact Ginkel made his spring debut in the fourth inning, when some projected members of the Guardians' Opening Day were in the game. He was one of the names mentioned by Arizona manager Torey Lovullo as a potential closer. Along with Ginkel, the manager mentioned Paul Sewald and Ryan Thompson, who pitched the third inning of Sunday's game.

Lovullo wants defined closer Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo mentioned Ginkel, Paul Sewald and Ryan Thompson as candidates to emerge as the club's closer, Alex D'Agostino of SI.com reports.
Impact "I mean it's probably simple arithmetic for you guys to figure out," Lovullo said. "I'm just going to go kind of blind here, but Sewald, Ginkel, Thompson, all those guys that have had that experience in big moments... they're all wanting to do it." Lovullo added that he would like to establish a defined closer, though it's unclear whether he plans to name one before Opening Day. A.J. Puk (elbow) and Justin Martinez (elbow) could also figure into the closer mix when they return, though the latter won't be back until late in the season, if at all. Ginkel had a disastrous, injury-shortened 2025 season, posting a 7.36 ERA and 29:13 K:BB over 25.2 innings. He's healthy now, however, and from 2023-2024 he held a 2.86 ERA and 147:38 K:BB across 135.1 regular-season frames.
FEBRUARY 17 • ROTOWIRE
No limitations at start of camp Ginkel (shoulder) threw a bullpen session Tuesday, Alex D'Agostino of SI.com reports.
Impact Ginkel missed most of the final two months of the 2025 regular season with a right shoulder sprain, but it appears he's come to camp without restrictions given that he's throwing off a mound on the first day pitchers and catchers reported to spring training. The veteran reliever is among those who should be in the mix to serve as closer as part of an unsettled Diamondbacks bullpen. Ginkel was limited to 29 appearances due to injury in 2025, finishing with a 7.36 ERA and 29:13 K:BB over 25.2 innings. From 2023-2024, Ginkel held a 2.86 ERA and 147:38 K:BB across 135.1 regular-season frames.
FEBRUARY 10 • ROTOWIRE
Reaches deal with D-Backs Ginkel (shoulder) agreed to a one-year, $2.7 million deal with the Diamondbacks to avoid arbitration Thursday, Jack Sommers of DBacks of SI reports.
Impact Ginkel is in the final year of arbitration eligibility, and he earned a modest raise of $300,000 from 2025. He was shut down for the season in early August, and it's unclear whether he'll be ready to throw at the start of spring training.
