Exercises 2022 option Profar informed the Padres on Wednesday that he'll exercise his $6.5 million player option for 2022, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.

Impact Profar opened the 2021 season as a utility player for San Diego, but his ability to play all over the infield and outfield allowed him to pick up semi-regular playing time for much of the campaign while the Padres contended with both injuries and endured slumps from multiple everyday players. The 28-year-old did little to raise the offensive floor for the Padres when he was included in the lineup, as he finished with a .093 ISO and .649 OPS after clearing .150 and .700 in those respective categories each of the previous three seasons. The deal Profar signed with the Padres last January includes player options for both 2022 and 2023 and a $10 million mutual option for 2024, so he'll still have the opportunity to weigh his options on the open market in both of the next two offseasons, if he so chooses.

Impact Profar left Wednesday's game against the Dodgers with a bruised shoulder and didn't start the next two games, though he did appear off the bench on both occasions. He'll be involved from the start this time around, batting fifth and playing right field.

Impact Profar suffered a shoulder bruise in Wednesday's game against the Dodgers and will be out of the lineup for a second straight contest. However, he appeared off the bench Thursday, so it wouldn't be surprising to see him available in a depth capacity in Friday's series opener.

Impact Manager Jayce Tingler clarified after the game that Profar's shoulder did not pop out of its socket on the play, but the injury was significant enough for Profar to be pulled without returning to the contest. It's unclear whether the utility man will need to miss any additional time as a result of the issue. Profar has been struggling at the plate of late, going 1-for-20 over his past nine games.

Slugs homer out of leadoff spot Profar went 2-for-6 with a two-run home run, a double and an additional run scored in a 9-6 win over the Giants on Wednesday.

Impact Profar hit out of the leadoff spot for the first time since early June, and the move paid off as he scored San Diego's first run and produced the team's only long ball in the contest. His playing time has been inconsistent of late, but with the Padres searching for a spark amidst a rough patch that has seen them fall out of a wild-card spot, it wouldn't be surprising if manager Jayce Tingler gives Profar additional opportunities atop the lineup to see if he can replicate Wednesday's performance.
