INJURIES

Shifts to 60-day IL The Marlins transferred Ekness (calf) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Sunday.
Impact When Ekness was initially placed on the IL on June 1 due to a right calf strain, manager Clayton McCullough indicated that the right-handed reliever would be out for approximately six weeks. Ekness' move to the 60-day IL ensures that he'll be shelved for an additional two weeks beyond that, likely pushing his absence into August. The 24-year-old posted a 1.69 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 5:5 K:BB in 5.1 innings over six appearances for Miami prior to being deactivated.

Facing six-week recovery timeline Marlins manager Clayton McCullough said Monday that Ekness is expected to miss approximately six weeks due to a right calf strain, Kyle Sielaff of Marlins.tv reports.
Impact After Ekness was spotted moving around in the Miami clubhouse with the aid of crutches following Sunday's loss to the Mets, the Marlins placed him on the 15-day injured list a day later. Ekness was recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday but didn't make any relief appearances during his second stint of the season with the big club. Given the estimated six-week recovery timeline, Ekness will remain on the shelf through the All-Star break.

Sent to IL with calf strain The Marlins placed Ekness on the 15-day injured list Monday due to a right calf strain.
Impact With the Marlins opting for an impromptu bullpen game during Sunday's eventual 10-1 loss to the Mets after Janson Junk (shin) was scratched ahead of his scheduled start, Ekness looked like a prime candidate to cover multiple innings in relief. The right-hander ended up going unused, however, with Christina De Nicola of MLB.com relaying after the game that Ekness was spotted using crutches to move around the clubhouse. It's unclear when exactly Ekness tweaked his calf, but he'll end up landing on the shelf without having made an appearance for Miami following his promotion from Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday.

Marlins pitcher Eury Pérez expected to miss approximately 8 weeks with odd leg injury

Miami Marlins pitcher Eury Pérez is expected to miss about two months with a bizarre leg injury sustained while he was stretching in the dugout

Recalled by Miami The Marlins recalled Ekness from Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday.
Impact The move corresponds with the Marlins placing right-hander Eury Perez on the 15-day injured list due to a right gracilis strain. Ekness made his major-league debut out of the Marlins' bullpen in early May, and across six outings he's allowed one run on two hits and five walks while striking out five over 5.1 innings. He also collected his first major-league save May 10 against the Nationals.

Optioned to Triple-A The Marlins optioned Ekness to Triple-A Jacksonville on Thursday.
Impact Ekness held his own in his first stint in the big leagues, allowing one run with a 5:5 K:BB in 5.1 innings of work. The hard-throwing righty could eventually settle into a high-leverage relief role for Miami, but he'll head back to Jacksonville for now to accommodate the arrival of Braxton Garrett.

Christopher Morel's go-ahead single lifts Marlins past Nationals 5-2

Christopher Morel hit a go-ahead single in the eighth to lift the Miami Marlins past the Washington Nationals 5-2 on Sunday afternoon

Earns first career save Sunday Ekness retired the only batter he faced to earn a one-out save in Sunday's 5-2 win over the Nationals.
Impact The Marlins have been playing matchups in the ninth inning during Pete Fairbanks' (hand) absence, and Sunday was Ekness' turn. He entered to face righty Curtis Mead with two outs and a runner on first base and earned his first career save on just three pitches. The 24-year-old made his major-league debut May 3, and he's now held opponents scoreless in three of four appearances while posting a 2:1 K:BB across 3.1 innings with Miami.

Contract selected The Marlins selected Ekness's contract from Triple-A Jacksonville on Saturday, Craig Mish of FanDuel Sports Network Florida reports.
Impact Although he's logged an impressive 21:6 K:BB, Ekness has struggled to limit runs in Triple-A this year, turning in a 5.68 ERA and 1.56 WHIP across 12.2 innings. He'll now join the major-league bullpen despite his difficulties and will be making his MLB debut whenever he gets into a game.
MAY 2 • ROTOWIRE
Thriving in relief role Ekness has a 1.48 ERA, 0.83 WHIP, 34:8 K:BB and zero homers allowed through 24.1 innings for Double-A Pensacola this season.
Impact Selected in the 12th round of the 2023 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Houston, Ekness could be a future high-leverage bullpen arm for the Marlins as he features a fastball that can touch triple digits and a potentially plus slider that he's still learning to command. After posting an 11.1 percent walk rate at High-A Beloit in 2024, Ekness has cut that mark to 7.6 percent with Pensacola this year, and the 23-year-old right-hander seems likely to get a promotion to Triple-A over the summer.
