Impact Soriano generated a huge number of whiffs (22) but struggled mightily with his control, surrendering a staggering nine free passes between walks and hit batsmen. The right-hander was elite through his first seven starts, posting a 0.24 ERA and 0.82 WHIP across 37.2 innings, but has since regressed to the tune of a 5.17 ERA and 1.59 WHIP over 38.1 innings across his past seven outings. Rebounds with quality start Soriano completed 6.2 innings in a no-decision against the Athletics on Thursday, allowing two runs on six hits and one walk while striking out seven batters.

Impact Soriano came into Thursday in the midst of his first rough patch of the season, as he'd given up 12 runs over 17 innings across his previous three starts. The right-hander bounced back nicely, keeping the A's off the scoreboard for five frames before yielding a run in each of the sixth and seventh innings. Soriano registered his sixth quality start through 11 outings and reached seven punchouts for the sixth time. He's in the midst of a career-best campaign, posting a 2.44 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 74:27 K:BB through 66.1 innings. Opposing batters are hitting just .187 against him, which places him in a tie for sixth in that category among qualified starters.

Impact On one hand, holding the Dodgers to a single hit is impressive, but they didn't often have to take the bat off their shoulders. Soriano landed just 48 of 92 pitches for strikes, though he racked up 16 whiffs on 36 swings. It was the freebies that ultimately ruined the outing, particularly in the sixth inning -- of the last five batters he faced, he walked four and plunked one. That forced in two runs, and Chase Silseth allowed all three inherited runners to score as well. The six runs allowed were a season high for Soriano, though he still has a 2.41 ERA with a 1.07 WHIP and 67:26 K:BB through 59.2 innings over 10 starts. He's allowed 12 runs over 17 innings in May, so the early magic looks to be wearing off. Soriano is lined up for a home start against the Athletics in his next outing.
