Blasts three-run homer Marmolejos went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run in Thursday's 8-5 win over the Angels.

Impact Starting at first base and batting fifth, Marmolejos launched his homer in the first inning. He was replaced by pinch hitter Evan White in the eighth. While the homer was an encouraging sign, Marmolejos struck out in his other two at-bats. He's now whiffed seven times in 21 plate appearances while hitting to just a .143 average in six games.

Looks like strong-side platoon man Marmolejos will serve as the Mariners' designated hitter and will bat sixth Monday against the Astros, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports.

Impact Starting for the third time in four games -- all against right-handed pitching -- Marmolejos looks like he's at least temporarily captured a strong-side platoon role for the Mariners. The 27-year-old only has one hit through his first eight at-bats, so he'll need to pick up the pace in his subsequent opportunities in order to hold off bench options like Tim Lopes, Dee Gordon and Dylan Moore for playing time in the corner outfield or at designated hitter.

Impact The 27-year-old was seen practicing in the outfield throughout summer workouts, but it's still somewhat of a surprise to see him get the start in his major-league debut. The starting job is more or less up for grabs, and a strong start to the season figures to warrant more opportunities for Marmolejos. He spent most of 2019 at Triple-A and had a .315/.366/.545 slash line with 16 home runs and 29 doubles in 101 games.
