Eyeing final bench spot The Cardinals' final bench spot will likely come down to Fermin or Jose Barrero, John Denton of MLB.com reports.

Impact Fermin already has a spot on the 40-man roster, whereas Barrero is in camp as a non-roster invitee. Slated to turn 26 later this month, Fermin has gone 7-for-28 with a 2:5 K:BB over 14 contests this spring. While Fermin slashed .311/.424/.500 last season at Triple-A Memphis, he's managed just a .189/.283/.221 batting line in 66 games with the Cardinals over the last two seasons.

Impact Fermin has seen minimal playing time since he was recalled from Triple-A Memphis on Aug. 21 to replace Nolan Gorman. Over eight games since that date, Fermin has gone 3-for-15 (.200) with three walks, and his two-run single Sunday was the first time he plated a run in the majors all season. The infielder has a poor .148/.246/.197 slash line with no home runs, two stolen bases, six runs scored, a double and a triple over 69 plate appearances. He's got a short-term path to playing time at second base as long as Brendan Donovan (foot) is out.

Impact Fermin is taking the roster spot of the struggling Nolan Gorman, who has been optioned to Memphis. The 25-year-old Fermin will offer St. Louis a backup option at second base, third base and shortstop and he could see some starts versus left-handed pitching.
