Elects to retire
Zimmermann announced his retirement Tuesday.
Impact
Zimmermann was close to retirement in late April when the Brewers chose to promote him from the alternate site, but he'll decide to end his career after all following just two appearances this season. He'll close his 13-year career with 95 wins, a 4.07 ERA and 1,271 strikeouts.

Opening Sunday's game
Zimmermann will open Sunday's season finale against the Royals, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Impact
Zimmermann has been a starter throughout his 12-year MLB career and likely could give the Tigers some length if they wanted it, but they'll want to give a handful of pitchers the chance to throw one last time this season. Tarik Skubal is expected to follow him out of the bullpen.

Shifting to bullpen
Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire confirmed Saturday that Zimmermann will work out of Detroit's bullpen moving forward, Ted Kulfan of The Detroit News reports.
Impact
Zimmermann returned from the right forearm strain that had sidelined him all season to make a start Thursday in his 2020 debut, working three innings while giving up an unearned run en route to taking a no-decision against the Cardinals. Since Thursday's game was a doubleheader that forced Detroit to run out a six-man rotation last week, Zimmermann will find himself as the odd man out since Detroit's schedule allows the team to get by with five starters the rest of the way.

Impact
Making his first appearance of 2020 after he experienced forearm tightness in July and landed on the injured list, Zimmermann tossed 24 of 42 pitches for strikes in a solid performance, but he was on the hook for the loss before the Tigers staged a late rally from a 3-0 deficit. It's not clear if the 34-year-old right-hander will remain in the rotation or move into a long relief role, but Zimmermann made a strong case for another turn.

Dealing with forearm tightness
Zimmermann is experiencing forearm tightness Friday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Impact
Zimmermann missed time last season with a similar injury, so it's a bit concerning to see the issue pop up with a week remaining until Opening Day. The right-hander was scheduled to pitch Friday, but he'll be held out due to the issue. The exact nature and severity of the injury aren't known, but he's set for further examination in the coming days.

Sees opportunity in short season
Zimmermann said he thinks the abbreviated schedule this year could allow him to stay healthy for the entire season, Rod Beard of The Detroit News reports.
Impact
Since coming to Detroit in 2016, Zimmermann has failed to reach 30 starts in a season as he's dealt with neck, lat, shoulder and elbow issues. He started at least 32 games in each of his last four seasons in Washington. "Not pitching the first couple of months of the season is probably going to help. I feel good right now and usually the last few years, it's been around this time where I would start getting tightness," Zimmermann said. "I don't anticipate anything flaring up this year." The 34-year-old has been a disappointment with the Tigers and has a pretty low fantasy stock at the moment coming off of a 6.91 ERA and 1.52 WHIP across 112 innings in 2019.
