Drew Pomeranz recalled from Triple-A for 2nd stint with Cubs, works perfect 9th inning
The Chicago Cubs selected left-hander Drew Pomeranz from Triple-A Iowa before Friday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals and optioned lefty Jordan Wicks to the farm club

Dispatched to Iowa
The Cubs optioned Wicks to Triple-A Iowa on Thursday.
Impact
Wicks logged a save in each of his two appearances during this stint with the Cubs, though they were both unconventional, with one coming in extra innings and the other in a blowout win. The Cubs will announced a corresponding roster move prior to Friday's game against the Cardinals.

Records easy save Wednesday
Wicks allowed one run on five hits across three innings of relief and earned the save in Wednesday's 23-3 win over the Padres. He struck out two.
Impact
Wicks certainly had a big enough cushion to work with, and he finished off the rout for his second save in the last four days. The lefty isn't necessarily Chicago's top option for saves, as his last one came after the team had already gone through six pitchers in an extra-inning contest, and Wednesday was simply mop-up duty. Wicks should settle in as a middle-relief option most days, which limits his general fantasy appeal.

Earns first save
Wicks worked around a walk to toss a scoreless inning of relief and earn the save in Sunday's 4-3, extra inning win over the Brewers.
Impact
With the Cubs starting opener Ryan Rolison, the team had already gone through six pitchers by the time Wicks came on in the 10th. The lefty did a good job of working out of some trouble left behind by Ethan Roberts, and that earned Wicks his first save of the season and just the second of his MLB career. The 26-year-old is still sitting with a rough 13.50 ERA overall, and he's not really in the mix for saves most days.

Promoted, set to pitch Sunday
The Cubs recalled Wicks from Triple-A Iowa, and he's expected to pitch behind opener Ryan Rolison against the Brewers on Sunday, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports.
Impact
The left-hander made two starts for Chicago in late May and gave up 11 earned runs across 6.1 innings before being returned to Iowa. Wicks will now get another look in the majors, this time following an opener. In four starts at Triple-A since that brief stint in the big leagues, the 26-year-old surrendered 18 earned runs over 15.2 frames.

Dispatched to minors
The Cubs optioned Wicks to Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday.
Impact
He has been rocked for 11 runs over 6.1 innings in his two starts for the Cubs this season. Wicks' demotion seems to clear the way for Edward Cabrera (finger) to rejoin the rotation this weekend against the Giants.

Pulled in third inning
Wicks (0-2) allowed three runs on four hits and struck out one without walking a batter over two-plus innings to take the loss versus the Cardinals on Sunday.
Impact
Wicks threw 32 of 49 pitches for strikes. All four hits were singles, but he was pulled after running into trouble the second time through the order. The southpaw has given up 11 runs over 6.1 innings while posting a 6:1 K:BB across his two starts in the majors this season. Wicks may not be needed for another start if Edward Cabrera (finger blister) is ready to return from the 15-day injured list when first eligible.

Handed another start Sunday
Wicks is slated to start Sunday's game against the Cardinals in St. Louis, Bruce Levine of 670TheScore.com reports.
Impact
Wicks will be making a second turn through the rotation, but he'll receive the start mainly due to the Cubs' dwindling pitching depth rather than merit. After being called up from Triple-A Iowa last weekend, Wicks made his 2026 debut for the Cubs on Tuesday, taking a loss in Pittsburgh after yielding eight earned runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out five over 4.1 innings. The 26-year-old lefty hadn't pitched especially well at Iowa prior to his promotion, logging a 4.44 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 20:12 K:BB in 26.1 innings across seven starts.

Pummeled for eight runs in loss
Wicks (0-1) took the loss Tuesday against the Pirates, allowing eight runs on nine hits and one walk with five strikeouts across 4.1 innings.
Impact
Wicks was summoned from Triple-A Iowa over the weekend and drew the start in place of an injured Edward Cabrera (finger) on Tuesday. Things clearly didn't go well for the left-hander, as he allowed five runs in the first inning, including a two-run shot to Esmerlyn Valdez. Wicks was able to somewhat settle in after a rough opening frame and generated 14 swinging strikes on 80 pitches. After the poor results Tuesday, it's unclear if the Cubs will let Wicks handle another turn through the rotation this coming weekend in St. Louis.

Drawing start Tuesday
Wicks will be the Cubs' starting pitcher for Tuesday's game in Pittsburgh, Jared Wyllys of AllCHGO.com reports.
Impact
Wicks was recalled Sunday to take the roster spot vacated by the injured Edward Cabrera (finger) and will also slide into Cabrera's open rotation slot. The left-handed Wicks allowed a total of just one run over his last three starts at Triple-A Iowa, though that came with a 12:8 K:BB over 15 innings. Wicks is likely to get at least one additional start this weekend in St. Louis, though that could change if he fares poorly Tuesday.

ROTOWIRE
Summoned from Triple-A
The Cubs recalled Wicks from Triple-A Iowa on Sunday.
Impact
Chicago optioned Wicks to Triple-A after activating him from the 15-day injured list back on May 16, but he'll be eligible to rejoin the big club after the Cubs placed Edward Cabrera (finger) on the IL in a corresponding move. Wicks and Cabrera had been on similar pitching schedules, so the Cubs could break Wicks into the rotation the next time a fifth starter is needed Tuesday in Pittsburgh. The 26-year-old lefty made all eight of his appearances with the Cubs in 2025 as a reliever, but he's been deployed exclusively as a starter so far this season at Iowa and has accrued a 4.44 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 20:12 K:BB across 26.1 innings.

Activated, optioned to Triple-A
The Cubs reinstated Wicks (elbow) from the injured list Saturday and optioned him to Triple-A Iowa, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports.
Impact
Wicks has been dealing with inflammation in his forearm and elbow since the early stages of spring training. He began making rehab starts with Iowa on April 18 and has since turned in a 5.48 ERA and 1.78 WHIP to go with an 18:10 K:BB through 21.1 innings. He'll stay put in the minors despite being given a clean bill of health, but with Matthew Boyd (knee), Justin Steele (elbow) and Cade Horton (elbow) all sidelined, Wicks could be called back up to the big leagues if Chicago's rotation depth is tested further.
