Picks up win in first start Lyles (1-0) allowed two runs on five hits and struck out eight over 5.2 innings in Sunday's win over the Royals.

Impact The only damage on Lyles' line came in the sixth inning when Royals catcher Salvador Perez hit a two-run homer. The 30-year-old Lyles threw 52 of 76 pitches for strikes in a fairly efficient first start of the season. The right-hander was expected to begin the year in a tandem starter role, but it appears he may be closer to a traditional starter's workload earlier than expected. Lyles had a rough 2020 with a 1-6 record, 7.02 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 36:23 K:BB across 12 outings (nine starts). He lines up to face the Padres on Saturday.

However, Woodward cited Lyles' strong spring as a motivating factor in a potential move to traditional starter. Lyles allowed four runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out 11 over 11 Cactus League innings.

Will pitch in tandem role Lyles secured a spot as a tandem starter after allowing one run on three hits over four innings in Tuesday's spring game against the Angels, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.

Impact The Rangers have three traditional starters and will use multi-inning pitchers to fill out the final two rotation slots, that's four pitchers for two slots. The tandems will likely be made up of a right-hander and left-hander, so Lyles is expected to be paired with a lefty such as Wes Benjamin, Taylor Hearn or Kolby Allard. "You just see by his body language, tempo and everything that [Lyles] feels really good about his stuff right now," Woodward said. "He's got four-plus pitches right now that he feels really confident with." It's unclear how Woodward plans to order each pitcher in the tandem or how many innings each hurler will be scheduled to throw on a given day. This could impact a starter's ability to throw enough innings (five) to qualify for a win.

Unhappy in undefined role Lyles allowed one run on two hits and a walk while striking out two over two innings in Friday's spring game against the White Sox.

Impact Lyles is one of several Texas pitchers without a set role at this point, according to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News. He's been told that he won't be used as a traditional starter, news that didn't please him, and could be used as part of tandem with another pitcher stretched out for multiple innings. "He's throwing the ball really well. Now, it's a question of how long can you do it? I don't know what the answer is. If he does [maintain his strength], then obviously he's a guy you would want starting," said manager Chris Woodward. The right-hander started nine games and made three relief appearances for the Rangers in 2020, posting a 7.02 ERA. Offensive numbers against him spiked after he reached 45 pitches; between pitches 46-60, batters had a .982 OPS against him.
