Hits rough patch Romero took the loss in Sunday's game against the Mariners, serving up tiebreaking solo home run in the top of the ninth inning.
Impact Romero initially had Rob Refsnyder struck out on a called strike three, but Refsnyder successfully had the call overturned and then proceeded to club his second home run of the season. After being unscored upon in his first 10 appearances of the season, Romero has yielded a total of six runs over 2.1 frames covering his last three outings. The left-hander has notched seven holds this season and will remain the Cardinals' primary left-handed setup man, despite the recent rough stretch.

Nabs first hold Saturday Romero struck out one in a perfect inning to record his first hold of the season in Saturday's extra-inning victory over Tampa Bay.
Impact The left-handed Romero was summoned in the eighth inning with a two-run lead and two lefty bats due up, but he wound up facing three righties after the Rays used a pair of pinch hitters. He needed 17 pitches to dispose of the Rays in order. Ryne Stanek has been used for both save chances for the Cardinals but has blown one opportunity and allowed six runners to reach base. Romero will continue to be used in high-leverage situations and get some save chances when the opposition has left-handed hitters due up, though the latter type of outings could be few and far between.

Among closer options Romero is expected to be among the relievers in the mix to close games for the Cardinals this season, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Impact Manager Oliver Marmol appears willing to let the team's closer situation "solve itself" rather than naming a go-to ninth-inning man before the season. Romero shared the closer job with Riley O'Brien down the stretch last season after Ryan Helsley was traded, and he finished with a 2.07 ERA and 55:29 K:BB over 61 innings. Goold writes of Romero that the Cardinals "still could trade the lefty for the right return," but the chances of a trade are significantly lower now than they were earlier in the offseason. In addition to Romero and O'Brien, Matt Svanson and Ryne Stanek are expected to receive consideration for closing duties.

Settles with Cardinals The Cardinals and Romero avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $4.26 million contract Thursday, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Impact It was the final year of arbitration eligibility for Romero, who is slated to hit the free-agent market next winter. The lefty reliever held a 2.07 ERA and 55:29 K:BB over 61 innings in 2025, picking up eight saves. Romero could be in the mix for saves again if he's still with the Cardinals on Opening Day, but a trade to a contender -- where he'd likely fill in a middle relief role -- is likelier.

Picks up another save Romero earned a save against the Athletics on Wednesday, allowing two hits while striking out one batter over 1.2 scoreless innings.
Impact Romero entered with one out in the top of the eighth frame when St. Louis led by two runs. He allowed a single to the first batter he faced before retiring the next two hitters. Romero then returned for the ninth and gave up a leadoff single, but that was quickly wiped out on a double play. Romero subsequently wrapped things up to finish with his seventh save of the season, four of which have consisted of over one inning. With Riley O'Brien (shoulder) currently on the shelf, Romero is the clear top option for save chances for the Cardinals.

Nails down save No. 6 Romero struck out one in a clean ninth inning for the save Tuesday against the Athletics.
Impact Romero recorded save No. 6 for the year, and each of those have come in the aftermath of the Ryan Helsley trade. With Riley O'Brien (shoulder) being day-to-day, Romero looks to be St. Louis' go-to weapon in the ninth inning for the time being. Romero had a 6.10 ERA through April 30, but he's posted a 1.12 ERA over his last 40.1 innings since the start of May to bring his ERA to a career-best 2.13 for the season.

Collects fifth save Thursday Romero allowed one hit and no walks with no strikeouts in a scoreless ninth inning for the save Thursday against Pittsburgh.
Impact Romero picked up his fifth save of the season, and each of which have come following the trade of Ryan Helsley. Riley O'Brien worked a clean eighth inning for a hold, and Romero should continue sharing ninth-inning work with O'Brien based on matchups to finish out the campaign. Romero owns a 2.25 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 45:22 K:BB over 48 innings in 2025.

Goes two innings for save Romero allowed a hit and struck out three over two scoreless innings to earn the save in Thursday's 7-4 win over the Rays.
Impact Romero was brought in for the eighth inning and threw 15 pitches in that frame. He stayed in for the ninth and added 11 more pitches to secure his fourth save of the season. This is encouraging usage -- over his last four appearances, he had two losses, one blown save and two holds, which made it look like his time as closer was over just weeks after it started. The lefty reliever has a 2.31 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 45:21 K:BB while adding 18 holds over 46.2 innings this season. Riley O'Brien has had a fairly stable August compared to Romero, which has pushed the Cardinals' late-inning situation into more of a committee approach.
