Out with hand injury
Nogowski was placed on the 10-day injured list with a bone bruise on his left hand Friday.
Impact
The move was made retroactive to Tuesday, so Nogowski will be eligible to return next Friday, though it's not yet clear if he's expected to do so. He's done very little in limited action so far this season, going 1-for-12 at the plate. Tyler O'Neill (groin) returned from the injured list in a corresponding move.

Clinches roster berth
Cardinals manager Mike Shildt confirmed Sunday that Nogowski was awarded a spot on the team's Opening Day roster, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Impact
Nogowski received a brief cup of coffee with the Cardinals in 2020, but his inclusion on the 26-man roster to begin the 2021 campaign comes as somewhat of a surprise given that he's limited to first base and the corner outfield defensively. The 28-year-old was able to win a reserve role with St. Louis largely due to his booming bat this spring, as he went 11-for-31 with two home runs and a 9:3 BB:K in Grapefruit League play. Expect Nogowski to see most of his initial opportunities this season as a pinch hitter.

Making excellent case for spot
Nogowski went into Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Astros hitting .423 (11-for-25) with two home runs, 11 RBI, nine walks and six runs across 19 spring contests.
Impact
Nogowski has already made a seemingly airtight case to serve as Paul Goldschmidt's primary backup at first base, but Zachary Silver of MLB.com reports Nogowski has also been tried out in the outfield on several occasions this spring. Defensive versatility naturally helps his bid to secure a roster spot while competing with a field of multiple candidates that have put together a strong body of work during Grapefruit League play.

Stellar night in win
Nogowski, battling for a reserve spot this spring, went 4-for-4 with four RBI in a Grapefruit League win over the Marlins on Saturday.
Impact
Zachary Silver of MLB.com reports two of Nogowski's three run-scoring singles came with two outs, making his night at the plate all the more impressive. The success at the dish Saturday pushed the 28-year-old's spring average to .353 (6-for-17) and his RBI tally to eight, enhancing his bid to serve as Paul Goldschmidt's primary backup at first base while also potentially logging some time in the outfield as well.

Makes early noise in bid for spot
Nogowski, who has a chance to win a reserve role on the Opening Day roster, slugged a three-run home run, drew two walks and scored twice over three plate appearances in a Grapefru...
Impact
The 28-year-old got his first taste of the big leagues in 2020 after a long minor-league career, going 1-for-4 in his one game. Nogowski enjoyed plenty of success at the plate over his time in the minors and is an excellent contact hitter, so he would appear to have a solid chance at securing the backup role behind Paul Goldschmidt at first base if he can acquit himself well enough during Grapefruit League action.
