Impact After claiming one of the Nats' final roster spots out of spring training, Wiemer was responsible for Washington's first run of the season with a solo homer off Matthew Boyd in the second inning Thursday. The 27-year-old Wiemer appeared in 27 games with the Marlins in 2025, batting .236 with three homers and a .715 OPS across 61 plate appearances. While Wiemer's 2026 debut was certainly encouraging, he'll likely be limited to starts against left-handers to open the year while platooning with Daylen Lile.

Appears to have won roster spot Wiemer seems ticketed for a spot on the Nationals' 26-man roster after Robert Hassell was optioned to Triple-A Rochester on Thursday, Spencer Nusbaum of The Athletic reports.

Impact The decision to send down Hassell may have been matchup-based, as he hits left-handed and doesn't offer a platoon partner for Daylen Lile. Wiemer swings from the right side and has experience playing all three outfield spots, making him a better fit as a bench option. The 27-year-old hasn't stood out in camp, however, batting .152 (5-for-33) with a 4:10 BB:K. Wiemer has flashed a bit of power and speed during his big-league career, but his contact issues and 29.7 percent strikeout rate have put a firm cap on his fantasy production.

Claimed by Nationals The Nationals claimed Wiemer off waivers from the Giants on Monday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.

Impact It's the third organization Wiemer has been in since November and fourth since August. The 26-year-old slashed .236/.279/.436 with a 2:23 BB:K over 27 contests for the Marlins in 2025. Wiemer is out of minor-league options, so he should have a good chance to make the Nationals' Opening Day roster in a reserve role.

DFA'd by Giants The Giants designated Wiemer for assignment Wednesday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Impact After being DFA'd by the Marlins in November and landing in San Francisco via trade, Wiemer will now go through the waiver process for the second time in as many months. His subtraction from the 40-man roster will create room for Jason Foley, who signed with the Giants on Tuesday.

Impact Wiemer had been designated for assignment by Miami earlier this week and is now on the move to a new organization. The 26-year-old hasn't seen extensive action in the majors since his rookie year in 2023, having bounced around to a few teams since then. Wiemer will compete for a spot on the Giants' roster and does not have minor-league options remaining.
