Optioned to Triple-A Ortiz was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk on Friday, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports.

Impact Ortiz will return to Norfolk after he went 5-for-19 with a double, three runs scored and six strikeouts over eight games following his call up May 14. Ramon Urias (hamstring) was activated from the 10-day injured list Friday and will replace Ortiz on the major-league roster.

Gets start at third base Ortiz is starting at third base and batting ninth for the Orioles on Friday against the Blue Jays, Steve Melewski of MASNSports.com reports.

Impact It will be the first time he's played the hot corner during his brief time in the majors. Ortiz is 4-for-18 at the plate so far with the Orioles.

Rejoins big club The Orioles recalled Ortiz from Triple-A Norfolk prior to Sunday's game against the Pirates.

Impact In a corresponding move, Baltimore optioned reliever Nick Vespi to Triple-A to facilitate Ortiz's move to the big club for the second time this season. In his abbreviated stint with the Orioles in late April, Ortiz appeared in three games and went 2-for-8 with four RBI and run. Though the 24-year-old is one of several intriguing Baltimore infield prospects, he may not be in line for anything more than short-side platoon work while all of Jorge Mateo, Gunnar Henderson and Adam Frazier are healthy.

Headed back to Triple-A The Orioles optioned Ortiz to Triple-A Norfolk on Sunday.

Impact After receiving his first MLB call-up Thursday, Ortiz proceeded to make three consecutive starts at second base and went a collective 2-for-8 with a run scored and four RBI. The right-handed-hitting infielder appears to have just been up with the Orioles while the team faced a stretch of three straight left-handed pitchers, so he'll head back to Triple-A with Baltimore bringing up an extra left-handed bat (Kyle Stowers) from Norfolk in a corresponding move.

Drives in three in debut Ortiz went 1-for-3 with three RBI in Thursday's 7-4 win over the Tigers.

Impact Ortiz plated the Orioles' first three runs in the contests. He had a two-run single in the fifth inning and a sacrifice fly in the seventh. It's a solid debut for the 24-year-old infielder. If he can play well, he could have a path to playing time at second base over Adam Frazier, who moved to right field to accommodate Ortiz's debut. Ortiz could also be an option at shortstop or third base, but Jorge Mateo and Ramon Urias have played well at those positions to begin the campaign.

Batting ninth in debut Ortiz is starting at second base and batting ninth for the Orioles on Thursday versus the Tigers in his major-league debut.

Impact Ortiz was recalled earlier Thursday and will be thrown right into the mix. The 24-year-old could see a little action at multiple infield spots for the Orioles but wouldn't seem to be in line for everyday playing time.

Summoned to majors Ortiz was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk by the Orioles on Thursday, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports.

Impact Ortiz finished strong at Norfolk last season and it has carried over into 2023 with a .359/.389/.500 slash line. The 24-year-old is a strong defender and has experience at all infield positions other than first base. While a good prospect, Ortiz might not play enough to produce any fantasy value.

Cleared from concussion protocol Ortiz (concussion) is playing in Florida and is expected to join Triple-A Norfolk for the affiliate's home opener Tuesday, Steve Melewski of MASNSports.com reports.

Impact Ortiz sustained a concussion during a Grapefruit League game, which wiped out much of his chance to audition for a major-league roster spot. The 24-year-old should be expected to see significant playing time at Norfolk this season, and a strong showing could get him to the majors before the end of the campaign.

Optioned to minors Ortiz (concussion) was optioned into minor-league camp Tuesday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.

Impact Ortiz reached Triple-A for the first time last season and slashed an impressive .320/.383/.534 over 115 plate appearances. He will almost certainly return to Triple-A Norfolk to begin the year, and he could be in line for a major-league debut if he continues to post similar numbers to last season.

Enters concussion protocol Oritz has been in the concussion protocol over the last few days after he was hit in the head by a batted ball, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports.

Impact Ortiz won't be able to return until he is not experiencing concussion symptoms. The shortstop prospect was added to the Orioles' 40-man roster in November after closing the season with a .320/.383/.534 slash line across 26 games with Triple-A Norfolk. He's likely to see much of his playing time at that level in 2023, though he could earn a midseason call-up to the majors if he plays well.
