Not making case for rotation spot Estes gave up two runs over 3.2 innings with two strikeouts and one walk in Sunday's win over the Dodgers. He has a 5.87 ERA with a 5:1 K:BB ratio in 7.2 innings this spring.
Impact Estes is competing for a spot in the rotation but likely isn't making enough of an impression win a job. Meanwhile, Mitch Spence has pitched well and Osvaldo Bido may still be a lock despite struggling (12.91 ERA). If he loses out on a rotation spot it's not clear if he'll move to the bullpen or move to the rotation at Triple-A.

Solid showing in final start Estes did not factor into the decision in the Athletics' extra-inning loss to the Mariners on Saturday, allowing three earned runs on five hits and two walks over five innings. He...
Impact Estes put together a serviceable performance to wrap up his 2024 campaign, bouncing back to a large degree from rough back-to-back outings against the White Sox and Yankees where he allowed a combined 11 runs on 16 hits and a walk over five innings. The right-hander allowed one ball to leave the yard Saturday -- a fourth-inning solo home run off the bat of Cal Raleigh -- while also yielding a two-run single to Josh Rojas in the same frame. After getting his first taste of the big leagues in 2023 via a pair of starts, Estes worked to a 7-9 record, 5.01 ERA and 1.23 WHIP across 127.2 innings over 25 appearances (24 starts) this season, tossing a shutout along the way.
SEPTEMBER 29, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Rocked by Yankees Estes (7-9) allowed five runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out one over four innings to take the loss versus the Yankees on Sunday.
Impact Estes gave up home runs to Jasson Dominguez, Aaron Judge and Gleyber Torres, accounting for four of the five runs on his line. This was the third time in four September starts that Estes has given up at least four runs after doing so just once in July and August combined. He's now at a 4.99 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 90:25 K:BB through 122.2 innings over 24 outings (23 starts) this season. Estes is tentatively projected to make his last start of the year at Seattle.
SEPTEMBER 22, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Roughed up by Cubs Estes (7-8) took the loss Monday against the Cubs. He allowed six runs on nine hits and one strikeouts in one inning.
Impact Estes got out of the first inning only allowing one run, but he allowed six straight hits to start the second inning before being pulled. It was Estes' shortest outing of his career, and his ERA jumped to 4.78 after the ugly night. The 22-year-old had been having a strong second half of the season, pitching to a 3.29 ERA since the All-Star break. He'll look to bounce back in his next start against the Yankees later this week.
SEPTEMBER 17, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Grabs seventh win Estes (7-7) allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits and a walk while striking out two over 6.2 innings to earn the win over the Astros on Wednesday.
Impact Estes logged his third quality start in his last five outings and avoided giving up a home run for the first time since July 26. The right-hander hasn't allowed more than four runs in any of his last 11 appearances. He's pitched to a 4.36 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 88:24 K:BB over 117.2 innings through 22 outings (21 starts) this season. Estes is projected to make his next start on the road versus the Cubs.
SEPTEMBER 12, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Tagged with seventh loss Estes (6-7) allowed four runs on six hits and struck out three without walking a batter over four innings, taking the loss Thursday versus the Mariners.
Impact Estes coughed up a pair of homers to Cal Raleigh and Julio Rodriguez, making it the fifth time this season he's allowed multiple long balls in a start. Ester has now given up at least one home run in seven straight starts, but he has pitched well over that span. Thursday's start ended an impressive run of nine straight outings in which he didn't allow more than three runs. The 22-year-old has a 4.46 ERA through 111 innings in his rookie campaign.

Settles for quality start Saturday Estes came away with a no-decision in Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Rangers, giving up two runs on six hits over six innings. He struck out seven without walking a batter.
Impact The right-hander was stingy once again as he produced his seventh quality start of the year, although he left the mound with the score tied 2-2 in a game during which the A's never held the lead. Estes has allowed two runs or less in eight of his last nine starts, a stretch in which he's posted a 2.88 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 39:9 K:BB over 50 innings. He'll look to keep rolling in his next outing, which lines up to come at home next week against the Mariners.

Continues impressive run Estes (6-6) earned the win Sunday, allowing two runs on two hits and one walk over 5.2 innings against the Brewers. He struck out five.
Impact Estes allowed a two-run homer by Gary Sanchez in the second inning but otherwise held the Brewers off the board to collect his sixth win of the season. After receiving a cup of coffee with the A's last season, Estes has been solid in his first full big-league season, carrying a 4.37 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP. Additionally, since allowing eight runs in a start against the Red Sox on July 9, he's been highly impressive, allowing no more than three runs in any of his last eight appearances while maintaining a 2.86 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 32 strikeouts over his last 44 innings. He'll look to continue this string of success in his next start, scheduled to take place in Arlington against the Rangers.

Outdueled by Baz in loss to Rays Estes (5-6) allowed one run on three hits and a walk while striking out five over 7.2 innings, taking the loss versus the Rays on Tuesday.
Impact It was a stellar pitching duel between Estes and Shane Baz, but Estes blinked first when he gave up a solo home run to Jose Siri in the eighth inning for the lone run of the game. This is the third time in 18 appearances (17 starts) that Estes has gone at least seven innings. He also hasn't allowed more than three runs in any of his last seven appearances. The right-hander is at a 4.44 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 71:22 K:BB through 95.1 innings on the year. Estes is projected to make his next start at home versus the NL Central-leading Brewers.

Stuck with fifth loss Estes (5-5) allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out three without walking a batter over 5.1 innings, taking the loss Wednesday versus the Mets.
Impact Estes mostly kept the Mets in check, though he yielded solo home runs to Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso. This was the first time since June 16 that Estes yielded multiple homers in an outing. The right-hander is now at a 4.72 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 66:21 K:BB through 87.2 innings over 17 appearances (16 starts). He's projected to make his next start at home versus the Rays.

Fans four in no-decision Estes did not factor into the decision in Wednesday's win against the White Sox, allowing two earned runs on six hits and zero walks while striking out four in five innings.
Impact Both earned runs came on a two-run blast by Andrew Benintendi in the second inning. Although he yielded three extra-base hits and needed 96 pitches to get through five innings, Estes has pitched well of late. The 22-year-old rookie has allowed two earned runs or fewer in each of his past five appearances (four starts), pitching to a 2.84 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 19:7 K:BB in 25.1 innings during that stretch. Estes will look to keep things rolling in his next start, currently scheduled for next week against the Mets.

Impressive in win over Dodgers Estes (5-4) allowed two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out six over six innings to earn the win over the Dodgers on Friday.
Impact Estes was shaky early, allowing a two-run home run to Teoscar Hernandez, but he quickly settled in. The right-hander recorded 15 straight outs before walking two with two outs in the sixth inning, only to get a strikeout to avoid trouble. Estes has allowed two earned runs or less in each of his last four outings (three starts), covering 20.1 innings in that span. For the season, he has a 4.77 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 59:21 K:BB over 77.1 innings across 15 appearances (14 starts). The 22-year-old's next outing is projected to be a favorable home matchup against the White Sox.
AUGUST 3, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Going back in rotation Estes is scheduled to start Friday's game against the Dodgers in Oakland.
Impact Estes had started in each of his first 13 appearances with the Athletics this season before he was deployed for 2.2 innings of relief this past Friday against the Angels behind starter Paul Blackburn, who was lifted after five innings in his first outing back from the 60-day injured list. The Athletics traded Blackburn to the Mets on Tuesday, so Estes' brief run in the bullpen will come to an end as he reclaims the vacated rotation spot.
AUGUST 1, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Works out of bullpen Friday Estes came on in relief in Friday's 5-4 win over the Angels, collecting a hold while allowing two hits and two walks over 2.2 scoreless innings. He didn't strike out a batter.
Impact After making each of his previous 13 appearances with the Athletics this season as a starter, Estes worked out of the bullpen for the first time with Oakland bringing Paul Blackburn (foot) back from the injured list Friday. Since Blackburn was making his first start with the big club in more than two months, he was limited to five innings and 72 pitches in his return, prompting the Athletics to turn to Estes in relief on his normal four days' rest. The Athletics cleared up their logjam in the rotation to some degree by optioning Hogan Harris to Triple-A Las Vegas on Friday, but Estes could still end up sticking in the bullpen if Oakland elects to proceed with Osvaldo Bido as its fifth starter.

Allows eight hits in no-decision Estes allowed two runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out four over 5.2 innings Sunday against the Angels. He did not factor into the decision.
Impact Estes held the Angels scoreless through three innings while navigating through some traffic on the bases before they finally scratched a run against him in the fourth. He then would surrender a solo home run to Mickey Moniak in the fifth and couldn't quite get through the sixth after allowing a two-out walk and single. He's now allowed two runs or fewer in five of his last six starts, three of which have come against the Angels. Estes will take a 5.11 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 53:17 K:BB in 68.2 innings into another projected outing against the Angels over the weekend.
JULY 22, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Cruises to fourth win Estes (4-4) earned the win Sunday, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and a walk over six innings against the Phillies. He struck out five.
Impact Estes began his start in an early hole after he allowed a one-out homer by Trea Turner in the first. However, the A's provided 10 runs prior to Estes being removed from the game, ultimately tallying 18 runs to allow the young righty to cruise to his fourth win. It was a nice bounce-back effort for Estes, who had allowed eight runs over just 1.2 innings during his previous start, which had come on the heels of his first complete-game shutout. Estes enters the All-Star break with a 5.29 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 49 strikeouts over 12 starts spanning 63 innings.
JULY 15, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Crushed in Boston Estes (3-4) took the loss Tuesday, surrendering eight runs on seven hits and a walk over just 1.2 innings as the A's were downed 12-9 by the Red Sox. He struck out one.
Impact Every Boston starting position player has at least one hit and one run by the end of the second inning, chasing Estes from the game in the process after 55 pitches (38 strikes). It was a hard crash back down to earth after he twirled a shutout against the Angels in his last start, but Tuesday's outing is more representative of the 22-year-old right-hander's level right now. Estes will carry a 5.53 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 44:14 K:BB through 57 innings into his next start, which is scheduled to come on the road this weekend in Philadelphia.
