Jumps into setup role Payamps tossed a scoreless eighth inning and picked up a hold in Tuesday's 7-5 victory over the Diamondbacks.

Impact Payamps worked the eighth inning just once all season prior to June 13, but with Peter Strzelecki going through a rough patch and Matt Bush (shoulder) on the injured list, manager Craig Counsell used Payamps in the setup spot that night and twice since. Payamps has allowed five runners to reach base over the three frames he has worked in front of closer Devin Williams, but he also kept the opponent off the scoreboard all three times. As such, expect Payamps to get the ball next time the Brewers need to protect a tight lead in the eighth.

Picks up second win Payamps tossed 1.2 scoreless innings of relief and picked up the win in Tuesday's victory over the Cardinals. He allowed two hits and posted a 4:1 K:BB in the outing.

Impact The Brewers were forced to extend their bullpen after starter Wade Miley (lat) left the game in the second inning, and Payamps was summoned in the fifth frame for the first time all season. He kept the opponent off the scoreboard, and when the Brewers took the lead in the top of the sixth, Payamps was put in position to pick up his second win of the season. He has been about as effective as can be of late, posting a 1.50 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 16:1 K:BB ratio in 12.0 innings over his last 10 appearances.

Secures first career save Payamps earned a save against the Padres on Thursday, allowing one hit and striking out one batter in a scoreless 10th inning.

Impact Milwaukee closer Devin Williams was deployed to keep a 3-3 tie intact in the bottom of the ninth inning, which he did successfully. After the Brewers took the lead in the top of the 10th, manager Craig Counsell turned to Payamps to close things out. The right-hander came through in the clutch situation, allowing a two-out infield single but nothing else in compiling a scoreless frame and notching his first career save. Despite the positive outcome, Williams is the clear closer for the Brewers, and Payamps isn't likely to see many (if any) additional save chances moving forward.

Dealt to Brewers The Brewers acquired Payamps from Oakland on Monday in a three-team deal with Atlanta, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.

Impact Monday's trade also involved Sean Murphy to Atlanta and William Contreras to Milwaukee, among other components. Payamps was an effective reliever in 2022, posting a 3.23 ERA and 41:16 K:BB in 55.2 innings between Kansas City and Oakland. He figures to handle low-leverage work in the Brewers' bullpen in 2023.

Impact Payamps had inconsistent results in September, posting a 5.19 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 8.2 innings over eight appearances. Although he tossed a scoreless inning Tuesday against the Mariners, he's apparently dealing with a back issue that will force him to miss the remainder of the regular season. The right-hander made a career-high 41 relief appearances between Kansas City and Oakland this year and generated a 3.23 ERA and 1.37 WHIP in 55.2 innings.
