Stumbles against Cubs
Ross (5-9) took the loss Saturday, giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits and a walk over 4.1 innings as the Nationals fell 6-3 to the Cubs. He struck out five.
Impact
The right-hander might be the Nats' de facto ace right now with Max Scherzer in Los Angeles and Stephen Strasburg (neck) having undergone thoracic outlet surgery this week, but he didn't pitch like it Saturday. Ross tossed 54 of 84 pitches for strikes in his shortest outing since May 26, and he'll take a 4.00 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 100:31 K:BB through 96.2 innings into his next start.

Five shutout innings in return
Ross (elbow) allowed three hits, two walks and a hit batter while striking out four over five shutout innings in a no-decision versus Philadelphia.
Impact
Ross had been out with elbow inflammation since July 7, but he was effective Monday. The right-hander threw 72 pitches (44 strikes) and didn't have his best command, but Philadelphia was unable to punish him for it. He had completed six innings in five of six starts prior to his stint on the injured list. For the year, Ross owns a 3.80 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 95:30 K:BB through 92.1 innings. He lines up for a home start versus the Cubs this weekend.

Reinstated prior to start
Ross (elbow) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Monday, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
Impact
Ross spent three and a half weeks on the injured list due to right elbow inflammation, but he'll start Monday's series opener in Philadelphia after he completed a bullpen session this weekend without issue. The right-hander struck out a season-high 11 batters in his last start, and he's generated a 2.25 ERA and 1.05 WHIP in 20 innings across his last three outings. Outfielder Yadiel Hernandez was optioned to Triple-A Rochester to make room on the active roster.

Returning Monday
Nationals manager Dave Martinez said Ross (elbow) will be activated from the 10-day injured list to start Monday's series opener in Philadelphia, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com report...
Impact
Ross' inflamed right elbow kept him on the shelf for his first two turns through the rotation to open the Nationals' second-half schedule, but he looks like he'll be good to go after he completed a bullpen session earlier in the weekend without issue. Before the elbow issue surfaced, Ross had emerged as one of the Nationals' most dependable arms after a rough start to the season. Dating back to the beginning of June, Ross has gone 3-3 with a 2.31 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 44:6 K:BB across 39 innings.

Throws another bullpen

Bullpen session scheduled
Ross (elbow) will throw a bullpen session Wednesday, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
Impact
Ross has been out since early July with right elbow inflammation. He felt some discomfort following a bullpen session last week but hasn't been shut down. If he gets through his next session Wednesday without issues, it's possible he heads straight back into the starting rotation, though a live batting practice session or rehab start have also been mentioned as possibilities.
