Launches first spring homer Aguilar went 3-for-5 with a double and a three-run home run in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals.

Impact Getting the start as the designated hitter and batting fifth, Aguilar crushed a Steven Matz offering to straightaway center field in the first inning to kick off a big day at the plate. The 31-year-old slugger racked up 22 homers and 93 RBI over 131 games last season with a .788 OPS, and he figures to be a dependable middle-of-the-order presence for Miami while splitting his time between first base and DH.

Will see action at DH Aguilar will split his playing time between first base and DH this season, Jordan McPherson of The Miami Herald reports.

Impact The veteran slugger was stuck at first base for most of 2021 without the DH available in the National League, and the end result was knee inflammation that shut him down in early September and eventually landed Aguilar on the 60-day IL. He's healthy to begin spring training, but rotating him between the two spots should save wear and tear on his knees as well as getting Garrett Cooper's bat into the lineup more often. Even with the early shutdown last year, Aguilar still launched 22 homers with 93 RBI in 131 games, and he'll be a key bat in the heart of the Marlins' order.

Who hit the most irrelevant home run of the 2021 MLB season?

Goes on 60-day IL The Marlins transferred Aguilar (knee) from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Sunday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.

Impact The transaction is a procedural move that clears a spot on the 40-man roster for pitcher Pablo Lopez (shoulder), who was activated from the 60-day IL in a corresponding move ahead of his scheduled start Sunday against the Phillies. Aguilar was shut down for the season in early September after experiencing left knee inflammation and later undergoing arthroscopic surgery. Aguilar should be fully healthy for spring training, and he'll likely be looking to land a one- or two-year deal in free agency this winter after he hit .261 with 22 home runs and 93 RBi in 505 plate appearances before being shut down for 2021.

Undergoes arthroscopic surgery Aguilar underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Monday, Craig Mish of SportsGrid.com reports.

Impact Aguilar wasn't expected to be able to return this season, and the surgery confirms that fact. Whether or not he'll still be recovering at the start of spring training is not yet clear.

Not likely to return in 2021 Aguilar (knee) is unlikely to return in 2021, Barry Jackson and Craig Mish of the Miami Herald report.

Impact Aguilar was diagnosed with left knee inflammation when he was placed on the injured list Sept. 8, and he's seeking alternate opinions to get a better idea of the extent of his injury. Lewin Diaz has seen increased time at first base in his absence and should continue to serve as the primary option at the position if Aguilar is ultimately sidelined for the remainder of the year.
