Signs minors deal with Phillies Hoffman signed a minor-league contract with the Phillies on Saturday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Impact Hoffman will make $1.3 million if he reaches the majors and can opt out at the start of May if not. The 30-year-old's 5.68 career ERA in parts of seven big-league seasons is poor even when considering he spent five years in Colorado and two in Cincinnati, but the Phillies might need him nonetheless. Philadelphia is currently without fourth starter Ranger Suarez (forearm) as well as likely sixth and seventh starters Andrew Painter (elbow) and Cristopher Sanchez (triceps). Even if Hoffman gets a call-up, however, he won't have much fantasy appeal.
APRIL 1, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Granted release by Twins Hoffman was released by the Twins on Tuesday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Impact Hoffman triggered the opt-out in his minor-league contract after failing to make the Opening Day roster. The right-hander pitched well this spring after a rough first outing and should receive interest on the open market, although it remains to be seen whether he'll be able to land a major-league deal.
MARCH 28, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Moved down to minor-league camp Hoffman was reassigned to minor-league camp by the Twins on Saturday, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports.
Impact Hoffman has an opt-out in his minor-league contract, and this could lead to him deciding to test free agency. The right-hander dealt with elbow troubles in the early part of camp, and he posted a 3.60 ERA over five innings in the Grapefruit League before the demotion.

Makes spring debut Hoffman (elbow) worked an inning of relief and gave up two earned runs on two hits and one walk while striking out two in Sunday's 5-2 loss to the Pirates in Grapefruit League play...
Impact Hoffman, who inked a minor-league deal with the Twins in late February, made his spring debut Sunday after spending the prior week ramping up at camp. The right-hander appears to be healthy again after forearm and elbow trouble sidelined him for most of the entire second half of the past season while he was with the Reds. Since Hoffman isn't a member of the Twins' 40-man roster, he may face an uphill battle to win a spot in Minnesota's Opening Day bullpen.
MARCH 7, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Heading to Minnesota Hoffman (elbow) signed a minor-league contract with the Twins on Sunday that includes an invite to big-league spring training, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
Impact Hoffman elected free agency after being designated for assignment by the Reds in November, and he's finally secured a new deal with spring training just underway. The 30-year-old had a 3.83 ERA and 45:23 K:BB over 44.2 innings last season but missed the second half with forearm and elbow issues. The right-hander's contract includes opt outs March 28, May 15 and June 15, so he'll have options if the Twins don't add him to the big-league roster.
FEBRUARY 26, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
DFA'd by Reds Hoffman (elbow) was designated for assignment by the Reds on Tuesday.
Impact Before having his season cut short in July, Hoffman recorded a 3.83 ERA and 1.41 WHIP over 44.2 innings in 2022 -- the best marks of his seven-year career to date. He lost his spot on the 40-man roster in order to make room for prospects being protected from the Rule 5 Draft, but considering the solid year he just had prior to injury, it's possible he'll get claimed off waivers by another team.
NOVEMBER 16, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Cleared to resume throwing Hoffman (forearm) has been cleared to resume throwing, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Impact Hoffman felt soreness in his forearm while throwing last week, but he apparently was not dealing with anything out of the ordinary. It remains to be seen when he will be ready to rejoin Cincinnati's bullpen.
AUGUST 14, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Responds poorly to throwing session Reds manager David Bell said Wednesday that Hoffman (forearm) wasn't feeling well after his throwing session in Milwaukee over the weekend and is scheduled to meet with a doctor, B...
Impact Bell acknowledged that he wasn't sure whether Hoffman would need to undergo an MRI, but at the very least, the right-hander looks like he'll have his throwing progression slowed down while he continues to experience forearm discomfort. Hoffman posted a 3.83 ERA and 1.41 WHIP across 44.2 innings out of the bullpen for Cincinnati before landing on the 15-day injured list July 24.
AUGUST 10, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Out with forearm stiffness Hoffman was placed on the 15-day injured list Sunday with right forearm stiffness, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Impact Hoffman presumably suffered the injury Saturday against the Cardinals when he delivered a scoreless inning. The severity of the injury remains unclear, though the 29-year-old will be eligible to be reinstated Aug. 8.
JULY 24, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Throws 1.2 innings in Game 2 Hoffman did not factor into the decision in the second game of Thursday's doubleheader, allowing zero runs on one hit and zero walks over 1.2 innings against the Pirates. He struck...
Impact The Reds were winging it in the nightcap; manager David Bell admitted in the afternoon that he didn't know who would start the second game. It ended up being Hoffman, who retired five of the seven batters he faced before turning things over to the rest of the bullpen. Hoffman has rebounded in a relief role this season (3.15 ERA through 30 total appearances) and will likely remain in the bullpen for the rest of 2022.
JULY 8, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Starting nightcap Hoffman is starting the second game of Thursday's doubleheader against the Pirates, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Impact Hoffman made 11 starts for the Reds last year, but his first 29 appearances of the 2022 campaign have come out of the bullpen. However, he's recorded a career-best 3.29 ERA and 1.33 WHIP in 38.1 innings to begin the season. The right-hander tossed 1.1 innings Tuesday against the Mets, so he'll likely be on a pitch count during Thursday's nightcap.
JULY 7, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Reinstated from injured list Hoffman (undisclosed) was reinstated from the COVID-19 injured list Wednesday.
Impact Hoffman landed on the COVID-19 injured list Friday, but his quick return likely means that he didn't test positive for the virus. He should be available out of the bullpen Wednesday against the Cubs after right-hander Jared Solomon was sent down.
JUNE 29, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Placed on injured list Hoffman was placed on the injured list for an unspecified reason Friday.
Impact Since the Reds didn't provide an injury designation for Hoffman on Friday, it seems likely that he's on the COVID-19 injured list. Assuming that's the case, he'll be eligible to return as soon as he clears the league's health and safety protocols, but his return timetable depends on whether he's tested positive for the virus. Right-hander Jared Solomon was recalled to take Hoffman's place in the rotation.
JUNE 24, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Gives up two runs Hoffman came on in relief of Reiver Sanmartin during Friday's loss to Atlanta and gave up two runs over 2.2 innings, allowing two hits and a walk without striking out a batter.
Impact Those two runs ultimately mattered, as a Reds rally in the ninth inning ended up one run short. At least Hoffman got some length in the game to save the back end of the bullpen, but he's in a role that provides little fantasy viability.
APRIL 9, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Inks deal with Cincy Hoffman agreed to a one-year, $925,000 contract with the Reds on Tuesday to avoid arbitration, Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.com reports.
Impact Hoffman posted a 4.56 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 79:45 K:BB over 73 innings for Cincinnati last season, and he's now officially under contract for 2022. The 29-year-old struggled as a starter but pitched better out of the bullpen, and he figures to remain as a reliever this season.
MARCH 23, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Dormant since shelling Hoffman hasn't pitched in the last two weeks since getting shelled against the Tigers on September 3, when he gave up four runs and served up two homers over 1.2 innings.
Impact The Reds have been carrying an eight-man bullpen and yet Hoffman hasn't been used at all. What's strange is that was basically Hoffman's only bad outing as a reliever -- in 18.0 previous innings of relief, he had a 1.00 ERA and 1.11 WHIP with a 24:7 K:BB. Nonetheless, manager David Bell hasn't had the confidence to use him during a tough stretch for the Reds.
SEPTEMBER 18, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Moving to bullpen Hoffman will shift to a bullpen role going forward, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.
Impact Hoffman returned from a shoulder injury to start Wednesday's game against the Mets, but he gave up five runs on seven hits and three walks in four innings. The right-hander struggled with command during his start and only threw 44 of his 82 pitches for strikes. Vladimir Gutierrez will take his place in the rotation starting Tuesday against the Cubs.
JULY 24, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Handed loss in return Hoffman (3-5) took the loss Wednesday as the Reds were routed 7-0 by the Mets, giving up five runs on seven hits and three walks over four innings. He failed to strike out a batter...
Impact The right-hander wasn't really fooling anyone in his first appearance since May 26, as he tossed only 44 of 82 pitches for strikes and served up two homers. Hoffman hadn't allowed multiple homers in any of his 10 starts prior to landing on the IL with a shoulder impingement, but his control and command were both shaky prior to the injury. On the season, he sports a 5.20 ERA and 39:30 K:BB through 45 innings.

JULY 21, 2021 • THEATHLETIC.COM
Reinstated prior to start Hoffman (shoulder) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list ahead of Wednesday's start against the Mets.
Impact Hoffman had been on the injured list since late May due to a right shoulder impingement, but he made four rehab starts at Triple-A Louisville prior to his activation. He most recently pitched July 7, when he tossed 82 pitches across 5.1 innings during his rehab outing. Manager David Bell said that the Reds will consider using a six-man rotation going forward, but it's not yet clear whether Hoffman will remain in the rotation following Wednesday's start.
JULY 21, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Starting Wednesday Hoffman (shoulder) confirmed Saturday that he's set to return from the injured list to start Wednesday against the Mets, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Impact Reds manager David Bell hinted earlier in the day that the team was looking at temporarily going to a six-man rotation, and it appears that will indeed be the case. It's not clear whether Hoffman will be in line for multiple starts or if he'll make just one before retreating to the bullpen. It's also possible he sticks around as a starter while Vladimir Gutierrez loses his place, though Gutierrez's 4.29 ERA in nine starts this season beats Hoffman's 4.61 mark in 10 trips to the mound.
JULY 17, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Temporary six-man rotation The Reds will consider going with a temporary six-man rotation when Hoffman (shoulder) comes off the IL next week, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Impact Manager David Bell wants to give Tyler Mahle and Luis Castillo a couple of extra days given that they didn't get much more than their usual rest after last weekend's series in Milwaukee. "There is a chance we would add (Hoffman) in for a couple of reasons," Bell said. "Some of our starters with (Tyler) Mahle pitching tonight, Luis (Castillo) pitching tomorrow, they're getting an extra day or two, but not an extra four days. There was only so many guys we could do that with, where we could give them a larger break."
JULY 17, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Another rehab start coming Hoffman (shoulder) is scheduled to make a rehab start Friday for High-A Dayton.
Impact Hoffman will be pitching for the first time since July 7, when he tossed 5.1 innings (82 pitches) in his fourth rehab outing for Triple-A Louisville. At this point, Hoffman appears to be fully ramped up for starting duty, but the Reds don't seem to have a spot available for him in the big-league rotation. Rookie Vladimir Gutierrez has emerged as a reliable No. 5 starter since Hoffman landed on the shelf in late May with a right shoulder impingement.
JULY 16, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Making fourth rehab start Hoffman (shoulder) will make a fourth rehab start with Triple-A Louisville on Wednesday, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Impact Hoffman has gone 10 innings without allowing an earned run during his rehab assignment. Despite the good results, the Reds don't seem to be in a hurry to bring him back or decide whether he'll start or relieve when he does return. They're also getting Michael Lorenzen back soon, and have gotten good work out of Vladimir Gutierrez, which might explain their lack of urgency.
JULY 6, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Third rehab start awaits Reds manager David Bell said Monday that Hoffman (shoulder) will make a third rehab start for Triple-A Louisville later this week, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer repo...
Impact Hoffman's second rehab outing came Sunday, when he struck out six over four scoreless frames. He was capped at 49 pitches in that outing, so the Reds may want to see him increase his count to the 60-to-75 range before activating him from the 10-day injured list prior to the All-Star break. The Reds have yet to determine Hoffman's role upon returning from the IL, but he would have to settle for bullpen duties if the club opts to keep Vladimir Gutierrez in the rotation.
