New father Reynolds homers as Pirates top Cubs 6-2

First-time father Bryan Reynolds hit a three-run homer in his return from paternity leave to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates past the Chicago Cubs 6-2

Not starting Wednesday Kipnis is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Pirates.

Impact Kipnis' role has been increasing in Chicago lately, as he'd started seven straight games heading into Wednesday's contest. It wouldn't be a surprise to see his playing time start to slip again soon, however, as he has just four hits in his last 14 games. Nico Hoerner starts at second base in his absence.

Returns to lineup Kipnis is starting at second base and batting ninth in Tuesday's game against the Tigers.

Impact Kipnis was out of the lineup Monday in favor of Nico Hoerner, but the veteran infielder returns to the mix Tuesday. He's slashing a strong .289/.421/.556 this season and he's had some success against Detroit starter Spencer Turnbull from his time in the AL Central with Cleveland, going 4-for-12 with two home runs.

It seems that Hoerner has the slight edge for playing time at the keystone, but manager David Ross showed Tuesday that he's willing to deploy both players. Kipnis has a 1.125 OPS so far in the early going, and he should continue to earn fairly regular playing time if he stays hot at the plate.
