INJURIES

Fans nine in return Paxton allowed two runs on four hits and a walk over five innings during Friday's loss to the Cardinals. He struck out nine and did not factor in the decision.
Impact Making his first MLB appearance in over two years, Paxton was greeted with a two-run shot from Nolan Arenado in the first inning. After that, Paxton shook off the rust and turned in a solid outing. His fastball touched 97.8 mph and he displayed the same strikeout stuff that he had prior to a series of big injuries. The 34-year-old will look to build off this in his next start, which is currently scheduled to be in San Diego next week.

Returns from IL Boston activated Paxton (hamstring) from the 15-day injured list Wednesday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
Impact Paxton has officially joined the active roster ahead of his scheduled season debut Friday in a start against the visiting Cardinals. The appearance will be his first in a major-league game since April 6, 2021. The oft-injured 34-year-old left-hander posted an uninspiring 6.23 ERA and 26:16 K:BB across 21.2 innings during his rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester and seems like a wait-and-see type in most fantasy leagues rather than someone managers should scramble to pick up.

Starting Friday vs. Cardinals Paxton (hamstring) will start Friday's game against the Cardinals, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
Impact Paxton will make his season debut after missing the first month-plus of the 2023 campaign due to a hamstring strain. The left-hander has shown the ability to miss bats in the past, but he offers some significant risk based on his lack of time on the mound over the past few seasons.
MAY 9, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Returned from rehab assignment Paxton (hamstring) has Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican from his rehab assignment, Chris Cotillo reports.
Impact It's a formality, as Paxton's rehab window is closing. He has not yet officially been added to the active roster, but that's coming soon and Paxton is expected to make his Red Sox debut this weekend against the Cardinals. He's been out all season with a hamstring strain.

Red Sox to activate James Paxton this week, then decide when to give lefthander a start - The Boston Globe Paxton signed with the Sox on Dec. 1, 2021, but has yet to throw a pitch for the team in a big league game.

Joining rotation next weekend Paxton (hamstring) will be inserted into Boston's rotation sometime next weekend at home against the Cardinals, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
Impact He won't be used in the two-game series in Atlanta, but he will start one of the following games. Manager Alex Cora did not rule out a six-man rotation, but Boston has off days Monday and Thursday, so a six-man rotation would really stretch the length between starts for their starters in the short term. Paxton has a 3.68 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 17:10 K:BB in 14.2 innings over his last three rehab starts.
MAY 6, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Makes rehab start Paxton allowed two runs on two hits and five walks while striking out four for Triple-A Worcester on Friday.
Impact Paxton made what could be his final rehab start before joining the parent club. The left-hander threw 96 pitches, which suggests he's ready for Boston, but his role is unclear. Paxton has been a starter his entire career, but the Red Sox currently have five starters with a sixth one, Garrett Whitlock (elbow), soon to return from injury.
MAY 6, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Making another rehab appearance Paxton (hamstring) will make another rehab appearance with Triple-A Worcester before the Red Sox make a decision about activating him, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.
Impact Although he's struggled overall on his rehab assignment, Paxton was terrific in his most recent outing Sunday, striking out eight over 5.1 scoreless frames while getting his pitch count up to 90. Paxton has only ever started in the majors, but the Red Sox to this point have not committed to what role he would have with the big club. The big left-hander has made just six starts at the major-league level since 2020 -- none in 2022 -- due to various arm issues and is currently on the injured list due to a hamstring strain.
MAY 1, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Fifth rehab outing coming Sunday Paxton (hamstring) is scheduled to make his fifth rehab start Sunday with Triple-A Worcester, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
Impact Though Paxton reported to spring training at full health after a lat injury suffered during a rehab assignment late last season prevented him from making his return to the big leagues following his April 2021 Tommy John surgery, he suffered a Grade 1 hamstring strain March 3 and opened the 2023 campaign on the injured list. While Paxton has remained free of any arm-related setbacks, the Red Sox have been slow-playing his return from the hamstring injury, likely due in some part to the fact that a rotation spot may not be available to the veteran southpaw. Paxton hasn't helped his case for being activated from the IL by getting lit up in his most recent two rehab starts, as he surrendered 12 runs (11 earned) on seven hits and six walks over five innings between those outings. If Paxton can sharpen his control Sunday while bumping up his pitch count to the 85-to-90 range, the Red Sox will face a tough decision regarding whether to activate him and what kind of role he might handle.

Shelled in relief outing Paxton (hamstring) allowed seven runs on five hits and two walks over two-thirds of an inning in a rehab outing for Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday.
Impact Paxton, making the third appearance of a rehab assignment, entered the game as a reliever and was scheduled to throw five innings but was given the hook after 43 pitches. Obviously the results are not what the Red Sox were looking for from the lefty, who was expected to need a couple more outings before joining the Red Sox. It's unclear if Wednesday's performance changes that plan. Of note, the appearance as a reliever suggests the Red Sox may be signaling a relief role for Paxton when he is eventually activated.
APRIL 20, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Two more rehab starts Paxton (hamstring) will make at least one additional rehab start after Friday's outing before being considered for the Red Sox' rotation, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
Impact Paxton was a little wild but overall effective in his first rehab start with Triple-A Worcester and will look to get a little more stretched out Friday. If he has just one more rehab outing after that, it could potentially set him up to join Boston's rotation as soon as April 24. Nothing has been decided, though, regarding Paxton's return date or role.
APRIL 14, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Second rehab start coming Paxton (hamstring) will make a rehab start at Triple-A Worcester on Friday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
Impact This will be Paxton's second rehab start; the lefty threw three innings for the WooSox on Sunday. After Friday, he could need another start or two before his activation. What Paxton's role will be, however, remains an open question. The Red Sox will have Brayan Bello, Corey Kluber, Chris Sale and Garrett Whitlock locked in the rotation. That leaves Paxton vying with Tanner Houck and Nick Pivetta for the final spot.
APRIL 12, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Hurls three in rehab start Paxton (hamstring) allowed two hits and two walks while striking out three over three scoreless innings in a rehab start for Triple-A Worcester on Sunday.
Impact Paxton threw 58 pitches (34 strikes) during a start in which he had been scheduled to go four innings. Presumably, missing the zone on 41 percent of his pitches elevated the pitch count and limited him to three frames. The left-hander is expected to get another start or two in the minors, before the Red Sox make a decision. Both Garrett Whitlock (hip) and Brayan Bello (forearm) are expected to return from injury -- Whitlock this week, Bello next week -- which makes for a crowded rotation. Chris Sale and Corey Kluber are locked in. Tanner Houck could move back to the bullpen, which leaves manager Alex Cora with a decision on whether Paxton or Nick Pivetta should have the fifth spot in the rotation.
APRIL 10, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Making rehab start Sunday Paxton (hamstring) will make a rehab start for Triple-A Worcester on Sunday, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.
Impact Paxton covered three frames during an intrasquad game this week after his rehab outing was scratched due to weather concerns, and he's scheduled to pitch four innings Sunday with Worcester. The veteran left-hander will likely require an additional rehab outing or two before potentially being cleared to join Boston's rotation.

Hits 94 mph in intrasquad game Paxton (hamstring) touched 94 mph over a three-inning intrasquad game at the Red Sox' spring training complex in Florida on Tuesday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
Impact Paxton had been slated to make his first rehab start with Triple-A Worcester, but he remained in Florida instead due to weather-related concerns. Things went off without a hitch during the left-hander's outing Tuesday as he continues to ramp back up following an early-March hamstring strain. Paxton is aiming to join the Red Sox' rotation by late April.

Impact The team reversed course due to weather-related concerns and Worcester's game actually wound up being rained out. Paxton figures to be ready for another start Sunday, with that one hopefully coming at a minor-league affiliate. The hope is that the veteran southpaw will be ready to join Boston's rotation in late April.
APRIL 4, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Scheduled for rehab start Tuesday Paxton (hamstring) is scheduled to make a rehab start Tuesday for Triple-A Worcester, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
Impact Paxton will make the rehab start in Buffalo against the Blue Jays' Triple-A club. The left-hander is making his way back from a hamstring strain that sidelined him throughout the spring season, and he will likely need to make multiple starts in the minors before rejoining the Red Sox near the end of April.
