Expected to be No. 2 pitcher
Arrieta is expected to begin the season as the Cubs' No. 2 pitcher, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.
Impact
Kyle Hendricks was officially named the Opening Day starter Tuesday, and Arrieta has slotted in behind Hendricks this spring, so that should continue into the regular season. Arrieta struggled the last two seasons in Philadelphia, but perhaps he can turn things around now that he's back in Chicago, where he won the Cy Young Award back in 2015.

Sharp Thursday
Arrieta tossed four innings of one-run ball in Thursday's Grapefruit League game against Cleveland. He allowed four hits and struck out five.
Impact
This looked like the Arrieta from his previous stint with the Cubs, as he was locked in against the 17 batters he faced. The veteran righty now has a 2.89 ERA and seven strikeouts across 9.1 innings this spring. He's coming off a tough 2020 campaign in which he posted a 5.08 ERA and 1.51 WHIP in nine starts for the Phillies, but Arrieta will have the chance to prove he has something left as Chicago's likely No. 2 starter.

Uneven start Friday
Arrieta allowed two runs on four hits and three walks across 3.1 innings in Friday's Cactus League game against the Brewers. He struck out two.
Impact
Arrieta was not as sharp as he was in his first spring start, when he tossed two scoreless innings with just one hit and one walk allowed. On a more positive note, the veteran recorded his first two strikeouts of the spring and increased his workload. Arrieta will likely serve as the No. 2 starter behind Kyle Hendricks in his first season back with Chicago. He'll be looking to rebound from the 5.08 ERA and 1.51 WHIP he posted in nine starts last season.

Throws bullpen Thursday
Arrieta faced live batters Tuesday and threw a bullpen session Thursday, but he's yet to appear in a Cactus League game, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.
Impact
The Cubs are working on mechanical adjustments with Arrieta in camp, so it's not too surprising that they're easing the veteran into game action. At this point in his career, the key is staying healthy, especially after injuries slowed him down the past two seasons. Expect Arrieta to continue ramping up slowly during spring training, but the Cubs hope he can shoulder a decent load during the regular season, likely as the No. 2 starter behind Kyle Hendricks.

In line to be No. 2 starter
Arrieta is projected to be the Cubs' No. 2 starter behind Kyle Hendricks to begin the season, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.
Impact
The Cubs lost Yu Darvish, Jon Lester and Jose Quintana this offseason, so there are certainly rotation spots to fill behind Hendricks. Alec Mills returns and will be in the mix along with Zach Davies, who came over from San Diego in the Darvish trade. Arrieta is penciled in as the No. 2 starter at this point, but things could certainly change during spring training.

Returning to Cubs
Arrieta (hamstring) agreed to a one-year, $6 million contract with the Cubs on Friday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
Impact
Arrieta spent the past three seasons with the Phillies, but he'll now return to the Cubs, where he pitched well across more than four seasons and won the Cy Young Award in 2015. He was less effective in Philadelphia while battling serious injuries, and he missed the final few weeks of the regular season in 2020 due to a right hamstring strain. However, the 34-year-old should be healthy heading into spring training in 2021 and should take on a prominent role in the Cubs' rotation following the offseason departures of Yu Darvish and Jon Lester.

Lands on injured list
Arrieta was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right hamstring strain Wednesday.
Impact
Arrieta sustained a Grade 1 hamstring strain during his start Tuesday, and he'll be sidelined at least 10 days. The right-hander underwent an MRI on Wednesday, the results of which aren't yet known. With just under two weeks remaining in the regular season, Arrieta will likely be unavailable for the remainder of the year. The Phillies haven't announced who will take Arrieta's place in the starting rotation.
