INJURIES

Popped sixth overall by Oakland The Athletics have selected Wilson with the sixth overall pick in the 2023 First-Year Player Draft.
Impact There is a pretty big gap between Wilson's elite ability to make contact and the rest of his tools. He hit .412 as a junior and .361 over his three years at Grand Canyon. Wilson had just 12 strikeouts in 108 games during his final two years in the Western Athletic Conference. Public scouting reports suggest he has a decent chance to stick at shortstop, and his father was 12-year big-league shortstop Jack Wilson, but he is only an average runner with an above-average arm, so he could move off the six. If that happens, his below-average power could become a disqualifier as it pertains to everyday playing time. There are shades of Tyler Freeman and Nick Madrigal with Wilson, but those aren't low-end outcomes for him, and the fact he comes from a small school doesn't help his case.

Outrighted to Triple-A Wilson was outrighted to Triple-A Sugar Land on Monday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact Wilson was sent to Sugar Land in late August, and he'll remain with the minor-league club after he went unclaimed on waivers. He's appeared in 10 games since his demotion and has hit .205 with a home run, four RBI and two runs during that time.

Loses 40-man spot The Astros outrighted Wilson to Triple-A Sugar Land on Monday, Jake Kaplan of The Athletic reports.
Impact Houston exposed Wilson to waivers in order to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for pitcher Zack Greinke, who is expected to be reinstated from the COVID-19 injured list ahead of his scheduled start Tuesday against the Rangers. The 31-year-old utility man will remain in the organization after none of MLB's other 29 organizations were willing to use a waiver claim on him.

Shakes off concussion Wilson (concussion) rejoined Triple-A Sugar Land's lineup Saturday and has gone 2-for-17 with an RBI while starting in each of the affiliate's last four games.
Impact Wilson was sidelined at Triple-A for about a week with the head injury before he was cleared to return to action. The 30-year-old utility man should continue to play on an everyday basis for Sugar Land with the hope of earning a call-up to Houston later in September.

Suffers concussion Wilson suffered a concussion after he was hit in the head by a pitch at Triple-A Sugar Land on Friday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact Wilson appeared in two minor-league games after he was sent down Wednesday, and he went 2-for-6 with a homer, two runs, two RBI and a walk. It's not yet clear how long he'll be sidelined after he was diagnosed with a concussion.

Goes to Triple-A The Astros optioned Wilson to Triple-A Sugar Land on Wednesday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact With Alex Bregman (hamstring/quadriceps) returning from the 10-day injured list, Aledmys Diaz will move into a utility role, which leaves no room on the Houston bench for Wilson. Since getting a call-up from Sugar Land on Aug. 6, Wilson appeared in six games and went 2-for-13 with two runs and an RBI.

Fills in at 3B Wilson started at third base and went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple and two runs scored in Saturday's 15-1 win over Seattle.
Impact Wilson was a late addition to the lineup after outfielder Chas McCormick was scratched with a left-hand injury. The resulting lineup shuffle included Wilson playing third base, as Aledmys Diaz was given a rest day. The bottom half of Houston's order was made up of a ragged crew, but Wilson, Taylor Jones and Jake Meyers combined to go 6-for-12 with a home run, two triples, two doubles, eight RBI and six runs. With news that Alex Bregman (quadriceps) is on the verge of returning -- he's making a second rehab start Sunday -- Wilson's days on the roster could be numbered.
AUGUST 22, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Gets start Friday Wilson started at third base and went 0-for-4 in Friday's 4-1 win over the Angels.
Impact Wilson was called up last week as the Astros deal with injuries at both corner infield spots. With Alex Bregman (quadriceps) sidelined and potentially out another week, Aledmys Diaz has been the primary fill-in at third base, but manager Dusty Baker opted to give Wilson a shot against left-hander Patrick Sandoval. There could be a few more opportunities for Wilson, pending the time Bregman needs to get back to full strength. He's hitless in seven at-bats thus far for Houston.
AUGUST 14, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Back in big leagues with Astros Wilson was recalled from Triple-A Sugar Land prior to Friday's game agains the Twins, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Impact Wilson appeared in six games with Oakland in July, going 1-for-6 with a run scored before being DFA'd and claimed by Houston on Monday. He seems likely to see the majority of his time at the corner infield positions with Yuli Gurriel (neck) landing on the IL and Alex Bregman (quadriceps) still rehabbing at Triple-A Sugar Land.
AUGUST 6, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Claimed by Houston The Astros claimed Wilson off waivers Monday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact The 31-year-old minor-league journeyman reached the majors for the first time in early July, appearing in six games for Oakland while going 1-for-7 at the plate before he was designated for assignment. Though Wilson will reclaim a 40-man roster spot and he joins Houston, he'll begin his tenure in the new organization at Triple-A Sugar Land. He could be the next man up for a promotion if Houston requires an extra infielder at any point over the final two months of the season.
AUGUST 2, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Removed from 40-man roster Wilson was designated for assignment by Oakland on Friday.
Impact Just one day after Wilson was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas, he'll be removed from the 40-man roster to make room for Oakland's recent trade acquisitions. The 31-year-old has slashed .288/.385/.630 with 14 home runs, 46 RBI and 39 runs in 49 minor-league games this year.
JULY 31, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Optioned to Triple-A Wilson was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Thursday.
Impact The 31-year-old saw minimal playing time during his stint with the major-league club, and he'll now lose his spot on the active roster to make room for newly acquired Starling Marte. Across six appearances with the Athletics, Wilson went 1-for-7 with a run and a strikeout.

Starting in left field Sunday Wilson will get his first major-league start Sunday against Texas, playing left field and batting eighth.
Impact Wilson made his major-league debut off the bench in Saturday's win and popped up in his lone plate appearance. He'll get a chance to start Sunday, though it could be his only opportunity to do so, with Mark Canha (hip) possibly returning from the IL as soon as Friday.
JULY 11, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Contract selected Wilson's contract was selected by the Athletics on Thursday.
Impact The 30-year-old was drafted back in 2012 and finally gets his first crack at the big leagues following a long professional career which included nine seasons in the minors and a brief stint in Korea. He's hit the ball well in 49 games for Triple-A Las Vegas this season, homering 14 times while slashing .288/.385/.630. He's primarily played third base and left field this season but has started everywhere except pitcher and center field at some point in his career, so he'll give the Athletics a versatile option to replace Chad Pinder (hamstring), who hit the injured list in a corresponding move.
