Blows another save chance Webb (6-4) allowed two runs on one hit and one walk without recording a strikeout in one inning, taking the loss and a blown save in Tuesday's 5-4 loss to the Diamondbacks.

Impact Webb served up a walk-off two-run home run to pinch hitter Ryan Waldschmidt in the ninth inning after having to mop up a mess by Daniel Palencia in the eighth. Webb has a blown save and a loss in each of his last two outings, allowing five runs over 1.2 innings in that span. Palencia's poor outing Tuesday could buy Webb some time to work out of his struggles, but the late innings are looking far shakier for the Cubs now than just a week ago if their top relievers continue to struggle. Impact After Ryan Zeferjahn let the Nats creep closer in the eighth inning, Webb was called in to put out the fire and got the final out of the frame before handling the ninth. Webb hasn't been tagged for a run since June 20, with his scoreless streak standing at 20.2 innings with a 0.87 WHIP and 21:7 K:BB, and he's converted all six of his save chances during that span. Daniel Palencia (elbow) isn't looking especially sharp during his rehab assignment, and Webb is making a strong case to hang onto the closer role for the Cubs even after Palencia comes off the IL.

Webb is just 7-for-11 in save conversions this year, but he's converted his last five chances and hasn't walked a batter in his last eight outings. Daniel Palencia (elbow) is nearing his return from the injured list, but Webb's 2.44 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 58:17 K:BB through 51.2 innings this year could keep him in the closer mix even once Palencia is reinstated.

Shuts door for save Wednesday Webb tossed a scoreless ninth inning to record the save in Wednesday's 7-6 win over the Dodgers.

Impact After starter Shota Imanaga allowed just one run in his five innings of work, Chicago's middle relievers allowed five runs in three innings. Webb then managed to slow done the imposing Los Angeles lineup for his sixth save of the season. The righty has pitched well with a 2.49 ERA and 56 strikeouts across 50.2 innings this year, and he's done a good job since stepping into the closer role. However, Daniel Palencia (elbow) is due back soon, and the Cubs also picked up Ryan Zeferjahn at the trade deadline, which clouds the back end of Chicago's bullpen a bit moving forward. At the very least, Webb has earned the opportunity to keep seeing high-leverage work, possibly as part of a closer committee.
