Takes loss in return to rotation
Lopez (4-4) allowed two runs on two hits, two walks and two hit batsmen while striking out six over 4.1 innings to take the loss versus the Nationals on Sunday.
Impact
Lopez is occupying the rotation spot previously held by Aaron Civale, who was designated for assignment Wednesday and subsequently traded to the Cubs on Saturday. This was a mediocre showing for Lopez, though he was able to avoid giving up a home run. He threw 52 of 84 pitches for strikes and may need to stretch out a bit after some time in the bullpen. He has a 6.64 ERA, 1.73 WHIP and 49:36 K:BB through 59.2 innings over 15 games (12 starts) this season. Lopez is lined up to make his next appearance on the road in Minnesota.

Rejoining Athletics rotation
Lopez will start Sunday's game against the Nationals, Jason Burke of Roundtable.io reports.
Impact
A path was cleared for Lopez to re-enter the Athletics' rotation when Aaron Civale was designated for assignment Wednesday. Lopez has made two relief appearances since being recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas last week, allowing four runs with a 5:1 K:BB over 4.2 innings. All told, the southpaw has logged an ugly 6.83 ERA, 1.79 WHIP and 43:34 K:BB over 55.1 innings in the majors this season.

Set to operate as opener
Lopez will serve as the opening pitcher for the Athletics on Friday against the White Sox, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Impact
Lopez was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday, surrendering four runs on five hits and a walk while striking out four over three innings in the team's loss to the Tigers that night. He will look for better success in his second appearance since returning to the big-league club. The Athletics haven't announced who will be following Lopez on the mound, but Aaron Civale feels like a strong candidate.

Back in majors
The Athletics recalled Lopez from Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday.
Impact
The left-hander was a rotation piece for the A's early this season, but he was optioned to Triple-A in early June after posting a 6.75 ERA, 1.84 WHIP and 38:33 K:BB across 50.1 innings. Lopez struggled in his first two starts with Las Vegas but rebounded by allowing just one run across 11.1 frames in his last two outings. He's likely to be available out of the bullpen, at least initially.

Impact

Bound for Triple-A after poor start
Lopez is set to head to Triple-A Las Vegas on Monday, Jason Burke of SI.com reports.
Impact
Lopez fell apart in the third inning of Sunday's loss to the Yankees, finishing with a line of seven runs on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts over two-plus innings. In the postgame, Burke noted that "Mark Kotsay said they needed five or six innings from [Lopez] on Sunday, and the performance, with the added mental miscue of not covering first [base in the third inning], has led to the left-hander being optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas." The 28-year-old has largely struggled in 2026, posting a 4-3 record with a 6.75 ERA and 1.84 WHIP across 50.2 innings (12 appearances). A corresponding move and further clarity on who will replace Lopez in the rotation will likely come Monday.

Earns fourth win in bulk relief
Lopez (4-2) earned the win Sunday against the Padres. He allowed one run on six hits and a walk while striking out three over 4.2 innings.
Impact
After Luis Medina recorded four outs as the opener, Lopez entered in the second inning and was able to work through traffic to limit the Padres' scoring efforts en route to the win. The southpaw has struggled with homers this season but managed to keep the ball in the yard Sunday after allowing at least one long ball in each of his previous four appearances. It remains to be seen whether the Athletics will continue deploying Lopez behind an opener, though he'll carry a 5.73 ERA, 1.77 WHIP and 35:31 K:BB across 48.2 innings (11 games) into his next outing, which is tentatively scheduled for Saturday against the Yankees.

Can't capitalize on big lead
Lopez pitched 3.2 innings against the Angels on Tuesday, allowing four runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out two batters in a no-decision.
Impact
Lopez was given a 6-0 lead after a big top of the third inning by the Athletics' offense. However, the southpaw gave a run back in the bottom of that frame on a Mike Trout homer, then allowed four straight batters to reach base with two outs in the fourth -- resulting in three runs -- before being pulled. The early exit cost Lopez a chance at a victory in what turned out to be a 14-6 final score in favor of the A's. Lopez had shown some signs of improvement in his previous two starts, giving up four combined earned runs over 10.1 frames, but he still has an ugly 6.14 ERA on the season. His next start is projected to be a road tilt in San Diego.

Fades late in no-decision
Lopez did not factor into the decision Thursday against the Cardinals, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks while striking out two over five innings.
Impact
Lopez was effective through the first four innings, allowing just one hit before trouble arrived. Victor Scott tied the game with a solo homer in the fifth, and Jordan Walker added another solo shot an inning later before a throwing error helped bring home an additional run that ended Lopez's outing. The left-hander threw 56 of his 86 pitches for strikes but continued to struggle with keeping the ball in the yard, now allowing multiple homers in three straight appearances. Lopez has also yet to complete six innings in a start this season. He now owns a 5.80 ERA, 1.71 WHIP and 30:27 K:BB across 40.1 innings and is slated to face the Angels next.

Fans five in third win
Lopez (3-2) picked up the win Friday, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks over 5.1 innings in a 4-3 victory over the Orioles. He struck out five.
Impact
Solo shots by Pete Alonso in the fourth inning and Adley Rutschman in the sixth accounted for all the offense against Lopez, who tossed 57 of 91 pitches for strikes before leaving the mound. The southpaw has yet to work more than 5.1 innings in any of his appearances this season, either in a starting role or as a bulk reliever, and he's been taken deep eight times in just 35.1 innings, giving him little margin for error. Lopez will carry a 6.11 ERA, 1.75 WHIP and 28:24 K:BB into his next outing, which is set to come at home next week against the Cardinals.

Steamrolled by Cleveland
Lopez (2-2) took the loss Saturday as the A's were routed 14-6 by the Guardians, coughing up six runs on eight hits and a walk over 5.1 innings. He struck out five.
Impact
Half of the hits off Lopez went for extra bases, including homers by the light-hitting Austin Hedges in the third inning and David Fry in the sixth. Lopez hadn't made a start since April 21, making only a one-inning relief appearance in between, but the extra rest didn't help the southpaw find his form. He'll carry a 6.60 ERA, 1.90 WHIP and 23:22 K:BB through 30 innings into his next outing -- if he doesn't have his turn in the rotation skipped again, it's scheduled to come on the road next weekend in Baltimore.
