INJURIES

Departs with apparent injury Herrera was removed from Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader against the Red Sox due to an apparent leg injury, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.
Impact Herrera worked a walk during the bottom of the third inning but suffered an injury while running the bases and required assistance to leave the field. The 24-year-old was already likely to sit for Game 2 after starting the matinee, but his availability beyond Sunday is now in question. Pedro Pages stepped in behind the plate and would operate as St. Louis' primary catcher should Herrera be forced to miss time.

Idle Saturday Herrera isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game versus Boston, John Denton of MLB.com reports.
Impact After slugging four home runs and tallying nine RBI over his last two games, Herrera will take a seat Saturday to give Pedro Pages a chance to start behind the plate.

Makes history in Wednesday's win Herrera went 3-for-4 with a walk, three home runs and six RBI in Wednesday's 12-5 win over the Angels.
Impact The 24-year-old took Yusei Kikuchi deep in the fourth and sixth innings before capping his huge performance with an eight-inning blast off Brock Burke. In the process, Herrera became the first catcher in Cardinals history with a three-homer game. The long balls were also the first of the season for Herrera, and through five appearances so far in 2025 he's batting .467 (7-for-15) with two doubles, five runs and eight RBI.

Will try throwing from knees Herrera will start throwing from his knees in hopes that it will help him better control the running game, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Impact Baserunners are 5-for-5 on stolen base attempts against Herrera this season and 60-for-64 since the beginning of last year. The throwing problems have led to Herrera sometimes being removed from games he starts in the later innings when the Cardinals need to prioritize defense. Herrera clubbed two homers among his first four plate appearances in Wednesday's game versus the Angels, and the Cardinals want to keep his bat in the lineup as often as possible. Improving his throwing will help ensure that.

Impact Herrera started the first two games of the season and went 4-for-7 with a walk, two doubles, two RBI and a run, and he'll receive a well-deserved rest Sunday. Pedro Pages is stepping in behind the plate to catch for righty Andre Pallante.

Impact The lineup the Cardinals are using in Monday's exhibition tilt against Triple-A Memphis -- one that features Herrera behind the plate -- is the same one Marmol is eyeing for the opener. Herrera has been in a competition with Pedro Pages for the St. Louis catcher job, and it appears Herrera will get the first crack at it. What the ultimate breakdown in playing time between the two catchers will be over the duration of the season isn't clear.

Heating up in Grapefruit League Herrera is 6-for-12 with one home run and a 0:3 K:BB over his last five Grapefruit League contests.
Impact The nice stretch at the plate came after he went hitless in his first six games of the spring. There isn't much question about Herrera's offense. Where he needs to improve is on the defensive side, and more specifically, his throwing arm. Herrera trained this offseason at Driveline's facility in Tampa, Florida, where he was put on a throwing program to build arm strength and alter his throwing motion, Lynn Worthy of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. The 24-year-old Herrera is competing with Pedro Pages for reps at catcher for the Cardinals, and the consensus is that Herrera will, at minimum, split the duties, and perhaps receive the lion's share of work.
