INJURIES

Lands on 60-day IL The Orioles placed Harvey (oblique) on the 60-day injured list Tuesday, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports.
Impact The transaction clears a spot on the 40-man roster for third baseman Maikel Franco, who signed a one-year, $800,000 contract with Baltimore. Harvey had been the leading candidate to close for the Orioles before suffering a left oblique strain in a Grapefruit League outing last weekend. With Harvey now sidelined until at least May 16, Orioles manager Brandon Hyde will likely turn to Tanner Scott, Shawn Armstrong and Cesar Valdez as the team's primary late-inning options for the first six weeks of the season.

Out indefinitely with oblique strain Orioles manager Brandon Hyde confirmed Monday that Harvey will be sidelined indefinitely with a left oblique strain, Dan Connolly of The Athletic reports.
Impact Hyde didn't go as far as saying that Harvey wouldn't be ready for Opening Day, but it's probably safe to rule the right-hander out for the start of the season, given his history as a slow healer along with the fact that he's dealing with more than just a sore oblique. Prior to getting hurt on his first pitch of Friday's Grapefruit League appearance against the Phillies, Harvey was viewed as the frontrunner for the Orioles' closing job, but Hyde will now have to look elsewhere at the back end of the bullpen. Tanner Scott, Shawn Armstrong and Cesar Valdez are the most likely candidates for the job, but it's possible the Orioles opt for a committee approach at closer to begin the season, which would limit the value of all of the team's end-game options.

Dealing with oblique issue Harvey suffered a left oblique injury Friday against the Phillies, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports.
Impact Harvey winced in pain following his first pitch of the outing and left the game with team trainers. It's a positive in some ways that he's not dealing with yet more arm troubles, though oblique issues can be worrying as well. His recovery timeline for his latest in a long line of injuries is not yet clear.
MARCH 12, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Exits in pain Harvey winced after throwing his first pitch Friday against the Phillies and left the game without throwing another one, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports.
Impact Injuries have unfortunately been the story of Harvey's career, as he's thrown just 154.1 total innings over the last six years. The exact diagnosis for his latest issue remains to be seen, but his track record leaves little reason to be anything other than pessimistic. If he's sidelined to start the year, Tanner Scott and Cesar Valdez could emerge as the top closing options in Baltimore.

Surrenders home run in loss Harvey (0-1) allowed a solo home run and walked a batter Wednesday as he took his first loss of the season.
Impact Harvey entered in the eighth to try and preserve a tie with the hope the Orioles could regain the lead in the ninth. However, Pete Alonso had other plans as he crushed a home run to right-center off the first pitch he saw to give the Mets their first lead of the game. It was the first long ball Harvey has given up in five appearances since returning from the injured list as he should still be locked in for late-inning duties despite the blown opportunity Wednesday.

Placed on IL The Orioles moved Harvey (elbow) to the 10-day injured list Wednesday.
Impact Considered a potential option to close for the Orioles coming out of spring training, Harvey's bid for the job was derailed after he experienced soreness in his right elbow late in summer camp. The setback is a troubling one for a young pitcher with a history of arm injuries, so Harvey is far from a lock to make it back from the IL in the minimum 10 days. Mychal Givens now looks like the clear best option for saves in the Baltimore bullpen with Harvey on the shelf.

Expected to open on injured list Harvey is expected to open the season on the injured list due to elbow soreness, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports.
Impact Harvey generated some buzz back in March after being named as a potential closer by manager Brandon Hyde. The 25-year-old has electric stuff, which helped him strike out 11 batters in his 6.1-inning big-league debut last year, but injury issues are unfortunately a major part of his profile as well, as he's averaged just 37 innings per season since being drafted back in 2013. This particular injury isn't considered serious, with the Orioles saying that a move to the injured list would be precautionary, but given his injury history and the fact that he was never listed as anything more than a candidate for the closing role, it's hard to have much faith in him at the moment.

Dealing with arm fatigue Manager Brandon Hyde said Harvey has a little bit of arm fatigue and is day-to-day as of Monday, Jon Meoli of The Baltimore Sun reports.
Impact The 25-year-old has been battling with Mychal Givens and Richard Bleier to become the Orioles' primary closer throughout summer camp. Harvey thrived after being moved to the bullpen during his rookie season with Baltimore, giving up one run and striking out 11 over 6.1 innings. It is unclear whether he will be forced to miss any time to begin his sophomore campaign in 2020.

Not assured closing role Orioles pitching coach Doug Brocail said Sunday that Harvey remains in the mix to close, but Baltimore has yet to decide on a top option for the ninth inning, Jon Meoli of The Balt...
Impact Along with Harvey, Brocail named Mychal Givens as a candidate to close for Baltimore, with southpaw Richard Bleier also viewed as a potential end-game option against lefty-heavy lineups. Unless the Orioles confirm a closer prior to Opening Day, fantasy players will have to take something of a leap of faith in Harvey, who boasts the best skills of the three contenders for saves. Durability concerns prompted the Orioles to move the 2013 first-round pick to the bullpen last season, and the 25-year-old thrived in his first taste of the big leagues, giving up one run and striking out 11 over 6.1 innings. Harvey's big fastball and above-average curveball should at least allow him to deliver quality production in the ratio categories if the Orioles elect to use Givens or someone else as their primary closer.

Throwing off mound Givens threw off a mound at Oriole Park on Monday, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports.
Impact The takeaway is that Givens is healthy and ready to start ramping up with less than three weeks before Opening Day. He and Hunter Harvey are expected to get the bulk of the save chances this season for Baltimore.
