Cam Smith - Homers in three-hit effort
Smith went 3-for-4 with a solo home run, a second RBI and two total runs scored in Monday's 6-3 extra-inning win over the Giants.
Impact
Smith has a pair of three-hit efforts and three homers over his last three games. The outfielder has had a lackluster season overall, but he's picked up the pace lately by hitting safely in eight of his last 10 games, batting .432 (16-for-37) in that span. Overall, he's hitting .226 with a .698 OPS, 16 homers, 44 RBI, 51 runs scored, 15 doubles, two triples and 10 stolen bases over 117 contests.

Hayden Wesneski - Goes seven innings in no-decision
Wesneski allowed three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four over seven innings in a no-decision versus the Giants on Monday.
Impact
Wesneski gave up solo home runs to Jung Hoo Lee and Drew Gilbert, but the right-hander was still able to claim his second quality start in three outings this season. He's shown little rust coming off of May 2025 Tommy John surgery, allowing no more than three runs in any start so far. He's at a 3.86 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 12:6 K:BB through 18.2 innings. Wesneski is projected to make his next start at home versus the Mariners over the weekend.

Carlos Correa - Progresses to tee work
Correa (ankle) has been cleared to hit off a tee, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Impact
Correa was given the green light to swing a bat nearly one week ago, and he's since been able to progress to tee work. It remains to be seen whether he'll be able to return before the end of the season after undergoing ankle surgery in May, but a timeline should come into focus as he continues to ramp up baseball activities.

Mike Burrows - Making rehab start Friday
Burrows (elbow) will make a rehab start for Triple-A Sugar Land on Friday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Impact
Burrows tossed 55 pitches over three innings at Houston's complex Saturday, and as previously reported, he'll make his next appearance at Triple-A. He figures to need at least a few rehab starts for Sugar Land, and he may remain in the minors once deemed healthy, as the Astros had optioned him to Triple-A Sugar Land on July 7 before later placing him on the injured list, which nullified the demotion.

Shay Whitcomb - Scrubbed from 40-man roster
The Astros designated Whitcomb for assignment Monday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Impact
The transaction frees a spot on the 40-man roster for the addition of waiver claim Nelson Velazquez. Whitcomb has slashed just .167/.216/.292 in his limited opportunities at the big-league level the past three seasons. The 27-year-old has hit .265/.342/.479 at the Triple-A level and can play all over the field defensively, so he could draw interest via waivers.

Nelson Velázquez - Claimed off waivers by Astros
The Astros claimed Velazquez off waivers from the Cardinals on Monday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Impact
Velazquez had been booted off the Cardinals' 40-man roster this past weekend after slashing .216/.289/.432 with four homers over 83 plate appearances. The 27-year-old is a candidate to get some starts in the outfield against left-handed pitching.

Daulton Varsho - Homers in Sunday's loss
Varsho went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Sunday's 7-2 loss to the Padres.
Impact
Varsho's first homer as an Astro put them ahead 2-0 in the top of the second inning. His blast was the last baserunner Houston would have in the game, as San Diego's pitching staff retired the next 22 batters in order. Varsho has gone 3-for-21 with a 4:5 BB:K across his first six contests with his new team after he was dealt from Toronto at the trade deadline. On the year, the outfielder is batting .237 with a .675 OPS, eight homers, 28 RBI, 41 runs scored, 19 doubles, two triples and 10 stolen bases through 105 games.

Cristian Javier - Yields two homers in loss
Javier (1-3) allowed four runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out two over five innings to take the loss Sunday versus the Padres.
Impact
Javier threw 62 of 86 pitches for strikes, but he was a little too hittable on some occasions. Fernando Tatis' three-run blast in the fourth inning was the difference, and Jackson Merrill had a solo shot in the second. Javier has allowed seven runs over 11 innings in his last two starts after pitching five scoreless innings in relief against the Angels on July 27. Javier has a 6.68 ERA, 1.70 WHIP and 25:16 K:BB through 10 outings (six starts) this season. Assuming he stays in the rotation, he's tentatively projected to make his next appearance at home versus the Mariners.
