Athletics right-hander Gunnar Hoglund won’t pitch this season as he recovers from hip surgery

Done for 2026 after hip surgery Hoglund (knee/back) will be sidelined for the rest of the 2026 season after undergoing surgery on his left hip Monday.

Impact It's the same procedure that Hoglund underwent in June of 2025, which also caused him to miss the rest of the season. He opened the 2026 season on the IL due to a sprained right knee and a lumbar spine strain and was given a cortisone shot for his left hip in early May. However, his hip injury was severe enough to necessitate another procedure, but the added time on the shelf should allow his knee and back to also recover. Hoglund will be sidelined for the rest of the 2026 campaign and will aim to be fully healthy for spring training.

Impact Hoglund has been out all season with knee and back injuries, though the injection for his hip could be related to his back issue. He had begun a throwing progression in late April, but it seems a setback led to the cortisone injection. There is no timetable for Hoglund's return.

Impact Hoglund sustained both a right knee sprain and a lumbar spine strain during spring training, but it is the latter injury that has caused the most issues for the 26-year-old right-hander. He was transferred to the 60-day IL on April 7, and while the PRP injection should help with his recovery, the Athletics have not provided a clear timeline for Hoglund's return.

Impact The back injury is apparently the bigger issue for Hoglund, who also missed time during spring training with a knee issue. The right-hander was officially placed on the 15-day injured list this week and will miss at least the first couple weeks of the season. Hoglund made his MLB debut last season, registering a 6.40 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 23:11 K:BB across 32.1 innings.
