Optioned to alternate site
Santos was optioned to the Giants' alternate training site Wednesday, Kerry Crowley of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Impact
Santos is going to be an important part of San Francisco's bullpen later this season and in future seasons, but the team is going to ease him into that role. He will get more seasoning against minor-league competition in the short term but should be back up sometime in the coming weeks.

Struggles in extra-inning loss
Santos (0-2) allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits and a walk with one strikeout in Tuesday's extra-inning loss to the Rockies.
Impact
Santos gave up back-to-back home runs to Ryan McMahon and C.J. Cron, and the Giants weren't able to dig out of that hole. After beginning his big-league career with a scoreless inning, Santos has given up six runs (five earned) over his last two outings, both losses. He'll need to produce better results to continue getting high-leverage assignments.

Falls apart Saturday
Santos (0-1) failed to retire a batter, allowing three runs on two hits and a walk to take the loss Saturday versus the Marlins.
Impact
Santos dazzled with a perfect inning versus the Marlins in his major-league debut Thursday, but his second outing was significantly worse. He allowed a tiebreaking two-run home run to Jesus Aguilar, then allowed Garrett Cooper to get aboard with a single. Wandy Peralta relieved Santos and allowed the inherited runner to score. The 21-year-old Santos has a fiery fastball and a good slider and should continue to pitch in mid-to-high leverage roles if he can avoid making too many mistakes.

Dazzles in MLB debut
Santos struck out two and did not allow a baserunner in one inning Thursday against the Marlins in his big-league debut.
Impact
He needed 16 pitches to complete a perfect first big-league inning, using 11 sliders and five fastballs. His combination of a 98-mph fourseam fastball and an ability to land his hard slider for strikes makes Santos an imposing late-inning reliever already. Jake McGee has a pretty firm hold on the closer's role, but if he were to stumble, Santos could immediately jump into the ninth-inning mix.

Recalled by Giants
Santos was recalled by the Giants on Thursday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact
Santos was added to the 40-man roster in November to protect him from the Rule 5 draft, but he was unable to break camp with the major-league club. Although the right-hander hasn't pitched above Low-A, he'll now be available to make his big-league debut against the Marlins' lineup, which has plenty of right-handed hitters. Santos is unlikely to pitch in high-leverage situations for the Giants.

Sent to minors
The Giants optioned Santos to their minor-league camp Monday.
Impact
Santos has yet to pitch above the Low-A level, so he likely wasn't a serious candidate to break camp with the Giants. After losing a year of development time due to the cancellation of the 2020 minor-league season, Santos will likely begin the upcoming campaign at High-A Eugene or Double-A Richmond.

Shielded from Rule 5 draft
Santos' contract was purchased by the Giants on Friday.
Impact
Santos logged a 2.86 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 26:9 K:BB in 34.2 innings (eight starts) at Low-A in 2019. He is working on improving his third-pitch changeup and his command, which will determine whether he ends up as a back-end starter or reliever. Look for him to open the year at High-A or Double-A.
