Impact Though the Tigers are bringing a right-hander (Spencer Turnbull) to the hill in the series finale, the lefty-hitting Polanco will ride the pine for the second time in three days. Though the Pirates haven't said Polanco's absence is the result of any injury, he may be sitting as a precaution after he collided in the field with teammate Phillip Evans in Saturday's 11-5 loss. Polanco could also be getting a day off as a result of his season-long slump, as the outfielder has recorded just two hits while striking out in 45.5 percent of his plate appearances to date.

Heads to COVID-19 IL The Pirates placed Polanco (illness) on the COVID-19 injured list Monday, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports.

Impact After Polanco missed a few workouts last week, reports surfaced that the outfielder tested positive for COVID-19. The outfielder's move to the IL and continued absence from camp suggests that he won't be ready to play when the Pirates begin their season Friday in St. Louis, leaving Jose Osuna and Guillermo Heredia as his most likely replacements in right field. Though Polanco is technically eligible to return from the COVID-19 IL in less than 10 days, he must first pass two tests for the coronavirus conducted at least 24 hours apart.

Impact The natural shortstop played second base Saturday. General manager Ben Cherington was interviewed during the AT&T SportsNet broadcast and said that he felt Tucker was athletic enough to learn the three outfield positions without affecting his ability to serve as a middle infielder. Looking good at practice Polanco received rave reviews for both his batting and throwing over the weekend from his teammates at PNC Park's summer camp, DK Pittsburgh Sports reports.

Impact "Homers to all fields, definitely homers in the river, said first baseman Josh Bell, referring to Polanco. "And then right after that, after having not thrown for maybe 40 or 50 minutes, he went right into right field and made a few throws to third, a few throws to second, a few throws to home.
