Blows first save
Gallegos (0-1) blew his first save of the season Monday in a 5-2 loss to the Mets, coughing up four runs on four hits in two-thirds of an inning.
Impact
Entering the game to begin the ninth inning with the Cardinals nursing a 2-0 lead, Gallegos saw Nolan Arenado sail a throw on what could have been the third out but instead was ruled an infield single by Mark Canha. Jeff McNeil then doubled, and Dominic Smith brought both home by beating Gallegos to the bag after Paul Goldschmidt fielded his scorching grounder deep behind first base. It was a tough way for Gallegos to blow his first save in five tries and eventually take the loss, but the right-hander's ratios coming out of Monday are deceptive -- his 6.43 ERA on the season would drop to 1.29 if Canha's hit were scored an error on Arenado instead.

Allows run in fourth save
Gallegos earned the save Saturday against the Reds after giving up a run on two hits during the ninth inning. He didn't strike out or walk a batter.
Impact
The 30-year-old surrendered his first run of the season on a single, a double and a wild pitch, but he fortunately entered with a three-run cushion and still finished out the save. Its Gallegos' fourth save in as many chances this season, and he's given up one run on four hits with a 5:2 K:BB across 6.1 innings.

Collects third save
Gallegos gave up a hit and a walk while striking out two in a scoreless ninth inning Wednesday to record his third save of the season in a 2-0 win over the Marlins.
Impact
There was some concern in the spring whether Gallegos would have to share save opportunities for the Cardinals this season or be the team's primary closer, but he's answered those questions decisively through the first couple weeks. The 30-year-old right-hander has yet to allow a run over five appearances, converting all three of his save chances and posting a 5:2 K:BB over 5.1 innings.

Notches second save
Gallegos converted a save against the Brewers on Saturday, allowing one hit and striking out one over 1.1 scoreless innings.
Impact
After Milwaukee scored its first run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, Gallegos was brought in to finish that frame and close things out in the ninth. The right-hander allowed a single to start off the final inning but escaped with the save by inducing a popout followed by a double play. Gallegos has converted both of his save chances on the season and has yet to allow a run through 3.1 innings.

Converts first save
Gallegos pitched a perfect inning to earn the save in Tuesday's 6-5 win over the Royals.
Impact
Gallegos received his first save chance of the year and got through it without drama. The 30-year-old right-hander isn't the Cardinals' official closer, but he's one of their more proven high-leverage arms with 19 saves and 44 holds to his name over the last three campaigns. Tuesday was his second appearance of the season after a scoreless inning in a non-save situation last Saturday versus the Pirates.

Team may go with committee
The Cardinals have been tinkering with the idea of having a fluid bullpen free of defined roles, so there are a handful of pitchers who could get saves in addition to Gallegos, Joh...
Impact
It sounds like Jordan Hicks, Genesis Cabrera and Ryan Helsley could all get opportunities in the ninth inning. There is no direct quote here from the brass, but apparently manager Oliver Marmol, pitching coach Mike Maddux and the front office are on the same page in trying to utilize an approach where pitchers are called upon because of favorable matchups and their top pitches instead of set schedules. Gallegos is clearly the team's best reliever, so he retains the most fantasy value, even in a committee; however, fantasy managers shouldn't be banking on 30-plus saves from him this season.

Inks deal for 2022
Gallegos signed a one-year, $2.41 million contract with the Cardinals on Tuesday to avoid arbitration, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.
Impact
Gallegos had 14 saves in 22 chances and 24 holds with 3.02 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 95:20 K:BB over 80.1 innings last season, leading to a strong salary number in his first year of arbitration eligibility. The 30-year-old was a dominant closer down the stretch in 2021, but he may open this season in a closing committee with Genesis Cabrera.

Set to arrive at camp
Gallegos (personal) is expected to arrive at spring training Thursday and will join the full team Friday, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.
Impact
Gallegos was delayed slightly for personal reasons, but it appears it won't cost him more than a week of camp. The 30-year-old right-hander is expected to be part of the Cardinals' closer committee this season, though Alex Reyes (shoulder) and Genesis Cabrera also expected to see some save opportunities initially.

Could begin year in committee
Manager Oliver Marmol said Wednesday that the Cardinals' pitching staff likely wouldn't have a set closer to begin the regular season, putting Gallegos' initial role into some doub...
Impact
Gallegos has been absent from the first few days of camp due to personal reasons, but he isn't expected to be away from the team long. It's worth noting that the Cardinals have also expressed interest in a committee-based approach in past seasons, but a closer has usually emerged among the team's pitching staff. Gallegos seems to be the top candidates to receive saves, but Alex Reyes (shoulder) and Genesis Cabrera should also be in the mix for ninth-inning work.

Brief delay for personal reasons
Gallegos wasn't available for the start of camp due to personal reasons, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Impact
Gallegos' delay isn't expected to last long, though it's not clear exactly when he's supposed to return. As long as he arrives in time to build up for Opening Day, he should have the inside track for the closer role in St. Louis.
