Booted off 40-man roster
The Guardians designated Valera for assignment Sunday, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.
Impact
Valera will cede his spot on the 40-man roster to infielder Gabriel Arias (hamstring), who was reinstated from the 60-day injured list. The 25-year-old Valera provided a lowly .534 OPS over 13 games during a two-week stint in the big leagues back in April and has produced a .276/.367/.417 slash line with four home runs and three steals across 150 plate appearances with Triple-A Columbus on the season. He could attract interest via waivers from organizations looking to bolster their outfield depth.

Optioned to Triple-A
The Guardians optioned Valera to Triple-A Columbus on Thursday, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.
Impact
Valera was a regular presence in the Guardians' lineup versus right-handed pitching initially upon his activation from the injured list in mid-April. However, he's slashed just .216/.237/.297 with a 1:8 BB:K and was out of the lineup for each of the last four games. The Guardians will make a corresponding roster move prior to Friday's game versus the Athletics.

Losing playing time
Valera is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rays, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.
Impact
The left-handed-hitting Valera will hit the bench for a second straight matchup versus a right-handed starting pitcher (Drew Rasmussen) after slashing just .216/.237/.297 over 38 plate appearances since being activated from the injured list April 13. Valera has a minor-league option, so he could be sent back to Triple-A Columbus to play regularly if playing time remains elusive at the big-league level.

Sitting versus righty
Valera is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Rays, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.
Impact
The 25-year-old was out of the lineup for the previous two games, but the Guardians went up against a lefty in both of those contests. Right-hander Nick Martinez is pitching Tuesday for the Rays, but Valera still finds himself on the bench amid a poor start to the season that's seen him bat .222 (8-for-36) with three doubles and no homers through 12 games. Angel Martinez is receiving a fifth straight start in the outfield while Daniel Schneeman starts in center field with top prospect Travis Bazzana making his MLB debut at second base.

Out of lineup against southpaw
Valera is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Rays.
Impact
With the Guardians facing a left-handed starter (Steven Matz) for the second day in a row, the left-handed-hitting Valera will once again hit the bench. Valera had been included in the lineup in each of the Guardians' prior five games, going 4-for-20 with a double, a walk, four RBI and a run over that stretch.

Idle against southpaw
Valera is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Orioles.
Impact
Though he'll head to the bench while southpaw Trevor Rogers takes the hill for the Orioles, the left-handed-hitting Valera had been seeing fairly steady playing time against right-handed pitching since being activated from the injured list Monday. He started in four of the Guardians' previous five contests, going 4-for-14 with two doubles and two RBI.

Makes second straight start
Valera started in left field and went 1-for-2 with a double in Wednesday's 5-3 loss to the Cardinals.
Impact
Valera started a second consecutive game since being activated off the injured list Monday. Both starts have come against right-handers, and the outfielder was pinch hit for in the seventh inning of Wednesday's contest when he was about to face a left-hander. Valera is 2-for-6 with a pair of doubles and RBI in his two games.
