Impact Workman is the odd man out with the big-league club after the Padres signed Austin Hays to a major-league contract Sunday. Workman had been with the major-league roster since Tuesday, going 1-for-3 with a double and three RBI in limited action over two contests. The 26-year-old has the ability to play all over the diamond, so he will be a top candidate to return to the Padres' roster if anyone goes down with an injury.

Impact Workman had been playing at Triple-A Toledo since the beginning of June, but he'll open his time in the Padres organization with the big club after he was acquired from the Tigers on Monday. The 26-year-old has seen time at second base, third base, shortstop and both corner-outfield spots between his stops in the majors and minors this season, so he'll offer the Padres some versatility off the bench.

Impact Workman finds a new home in San Diego after spending a majority of his season with Triple-A Toledo. Workman struggled in his brief time in the majors, recording just six hits in 38 plate appearances. The 26-year-old slashed .305/.366/.502 with 11 home runs, 51 RBI and 20 stolen bases in 363 plate appearances with Toledo this season. Workman will most likely report to Triple-A El Paso.

Impact Workman ended up being the roster casualty after the Tigers activated outfielder Kerry Carpenter (shoulder) from the 10-day injured list prior to Sunday's series finale versus the White Sox. After being called up from Triple-A on May 10 when Carpenter was initially placed on the shelf, Workman appeared in 16 games for Detroit but slashed just .158/.158/.553 with a 42.1 percent strikeout rate over 38 plate appearances.

Impact Since being selected by the Cubs in the Rule 5 Draft this offseason, Workman has slashed .188/.235/.250 in the majors and has been cast off the active rosters of both Chicago clubs. He'll now return to his original organization without a spot on the 40-man roster and presumably report to Triple-A Toledo and serve as organizational depth.
