Could move into platoon role Duran is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Phillies.

Impact He'll bow out of the starting nine for the second time in three games with the Rangers opposing a right-handed starting pitcher (Kyle Gibson), and Duran's time as an everyday player could be over now that fellow rookie Josh H. Smith (shoulder) is back from the 10-day injured list. Since Smith hits from the left side of the plate, he could end up filling the strong side of a platoon at third base while Duran makes most of his starts at the position versus left-handed pitching. Duran has experience at second base and shortstop, too, but big-ticket offseason pickups Marcus Semien and Corey Seager won't get too many days off when both are healthy. Designated hitter doesn't look like a viable path to playing time either for Duran, as Mitch Garver (illness) was reinstated from the COVID-19-related injured list Tuesday and should be a fixture at that spot in the lineup moving forward.

Swipes second bag Duran went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored in a 4-3 loss to the Astros on Tuesday.

Impact Duran singled to lead off the third inning and came around to score on an RBI single by Marcus Semien. The former would later go on to steal third base off Bryan Abreu after advancing to second on a wild pitch in the seventh. The rookie infielder has only played in 10 games since being called up from the minors June 4, but he already has a couple of home runs and steals. If Duran continues to reach base at anywhere near his current .341 clip, he should continue to find opportunities to run.

Making big-league debut Saturday Duran will be called up from Double-A Frisco to start at third base Saturday against the Mariners, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Impact Josh Smith, who was acquired along with Duran from the Yankees in the Joey Gallo trade, is dealing with a shoulder injury, and Duran was already on the 40-man roster. While he has never played at Triple-A, Duran was slashing .317/.365/.574 with seven home runs, seven steals and an 18.0 K% in 200 plate appearances at Double-A. The 23-year-old played shortstop, second base and third base this season for Frisco.

Scorching at Frisco Duran went 4-for-4 with a walk, two doubles, two home runs, five RBI and five runs scored for Double-A Frisco on Sunday.

Impact After collecting four hits in his first four at-bats, Duran showed a good approach over this final two plate appearances, working a work and a run-producing sacrifice fly. Those final two plate appearances are what stood out to Frisco manager Jared Goedert, Tyler Maun of MLB.com reports. "I would say that's a definite sign of maturity, of that maturity coming, because that is tough for hitters," the manager said. "I was pretty impressed with him on that." The second-base prospect has turned it on during the month of May. Over the last 12 games, he's 21-for-49 (.429) with seven doubles, four homers, one triple and 15 RBI. Duran was one of the prizes coming over from the Yankees in the Joey Gallo deal, but he struggled with the new organization in 2021. It looks like he struggles no longer.

Impact Duran had his contract selected by the Rangers in November and was with the big-league club to open spring training, but he never had a realistic chance to make the Opening Day roster given he spent the 2021 campaign at the High-A level. He was acquired from the Yankees last season and hit .267/.342/.486 with 19 home runs, 79 RBI and 19 stolen bases in 105 games.

Impact Duran posted a .907 OPS in 67 games at the High-A level in the Yankees' system to start the year, but that number dropped to .695 in 38 games following a trade to Texas. While he has plenty of work to do before pushing for a big-league debut, the Rangers still elected to protect him from the Rule 5 draft.
