Designated for assignment Inciarte was activated from the COVID-19 injured list Saturday and designated for assignment.

Impact Inciarte is in the final year of a five-year, $30.5 million contract, but Atlanta will have to pay him the remainder of this year's $8 million salary whether or not he's part of the roster. The team evidently decided they'd rather pay him to not play than keep him around. It's hard to argue with that decision considering that his .592 OPS in limited action this season isn't much better than his .512 mark from last year, though it's notable that the 30-year-old isn't deemed worthy of a roster spot even on a squad that's already lost fellow outfielders Ronald Acuna (knee) and Marcell Ozuna (not injury related). That seemingly doesn't bode well for Inciarte's ability to find a spot on an active roster elsewhere.

On COVID-19 IL Atlanta confirmed that Inciarte was placed on the injured list Monday due to COVID-19 health and safety protocols.

Impact Inciarte has been testing negative for the virus, so his deactivation may have been the result of him being a close contact of an infected person or persons. Assuming Inciarte remains negative in his subsequent testing, he could rejoin Atlanta before the end of the week.

Impact Atlanta didn't provide an injury designation for Inciarte, so his deactivation could be related to COVID-19 protocols. Regardless, Inciarte's absence shouldn't prove costly, given that Atlanta has Abraham Almonte and Ehire Adrianza to provide depth in the outfield behind regular starters Joc Pederson, Guillermo Heredia and Orlando Arcia. Inciarte hasn't started since June 26 and has only nine plate appearances off the bench since that time.

Impact Even though top center fielder Guillermo Heredia has gone 2-for-29 over his past eight games, Atlanta doesn't appear to be considering dropping him from the lineup in favor of Inciarte. The 30-year-old still brings value with his glove, but Inciarte's deplorable .592 OPS and career-worst 24.7 percent strikeout rate on the season give Atlanta little reason to open up playing time for him.
