INJURIES

Walks four in no-decision May allowed two runs on two hits, four walks and a hit batsman while striking out four over four innings in a no-decision versus Atlanta on Sunday.
Impact May also unloaded a wild pitch, showcasing shaky control throughout the brief start. He's now fallen short of the five-inning mark in four straight games since he pitched his first career shutout June 15 versus the Padres, though he dealt with back tightness and an ankle injury in subsequent starts that have left him with limited workloads heading into the break. May is at a 4.55 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 89:28 K:BB across 93 innings over 18 starts this season.
4 DAYS AGO • ROTOWIRE
Fans seven in no-decision May did not factor into the decision Monday, allowing four hits and no walks over 4.2 scoreless innings against the Brewers. He struck out seven.
Impact After exiting his previous start Thursday due to a right ankle injury, May kept the Milwaukee offense quiet before being removed after 81 pitches (55 strikes) as St. Louis planned to limit his workload Monday. It was a positive step in the right direction for the right-hander, who had surrendered a combined 11 runs across 2.2 innings in his previous two starts. On the year, the 28-year-old owns a 5-6 record with a 4.55 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 85:24 K:BB across 89 innings (17 starts). May is tentatively scheduled to make his next start Saturday against Atlanta.
JULY 7 • ROTOWIRE
Will have limited workload Monday May will be held to around 65 pitches during Monday's start against the Brewers, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
Impact May made a quick recovery from a right ankle injury that forced him from last Thursday's start in Atlanta. However, the right-hander will be pitching on three days' rest Monday, and he has not thrown more than 44 pitches in a start in three weeks. The Cardinals will be cautious with May versus the Brewers, but assuming he comes out of Monday's outing with no setbacks, May should be ready for a normal workload this weekend against Atlanta.
JULY 6 • ROTOWIRE
Set to start Monday May (ankle) is scheduled to start Monday's game against the Brewers, Daniel Guerrero of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Impact The right-hander departed his start Thursday against Atlanta during the first inning after taking a comebacker off the ankle, but he'll re-enter the rotation Monday on just three days rest after the shortened outing. May has surrendered 11 runs in his past two starts, but prior to that he had a 1.30 ERA, 0.58 WHIP and 33:4 K:BB across 27.2 frames in his previous four outings.
JULY 5 • ROTOWIRE
Avoiding injured list for now May (ankle) will not be placed on the injured list prior to Friday's game against the Cubs, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Impact May recorded only two outs in Thursday's start in Atlanta before being forced from the outing after taking a comebacker off his right ankle. X-rays were clean and he reported improvement with the ankle Friday, which was enough for May to avoid the IL for the time being. May is tentatively scheduled to make a start during Tuesday's doubleheader against the Brewers, though he'll need to get through a bullpen session first before being cleared to pitch that day.
JULY 3 • ROTOWIRE
Reports improvement with ankle Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol and May both said that the hurler's right ankle felt better than expected Friday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
Impact He planned to test the ankle out with some catch at Wrigley Field, but rain in the forecast might prevent that from happening. May was forced to depart Thursday's start in Atlanta after recording just two outs because of a comebacker that struck him on the ankle. X-rays were negative and May has a chance to make his next start, but his status will become clearer in the coming days.
JULY 3 • ROTOWIRE
X-rays come back negative X-rays on May's injured right ankle came back negative Thursday, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Impact May said his ankle/shin area is "soft" and painful, per Goold, indicating it will be a pain tolerance and swelling issue moving forward. The right-hander was struck by a line drive off the bat of Dominic Smith in the bottom of the first inning of Thursday's start versus Atlanta, and May was pulled from the game a few batters later after allowing five runs on five hits and two walks with one strikeout while recording just two outs on 34 pitches. The St. Louis bullpen covered 8.1 frames, yielding a combined three hits and one walk in an 11-5 victory. It's unclear at this point if May will be able to make his next scheduled start.
JULY 3 • ROTOWIRE
Exits early with ankle injury May exited Thursday's start against Atlanta in the first inning with a right ankle contusion, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Impact May was making his first start since June 21 after his last turn in the rotation was skipped due to the right-hander dealing with back tightness. May struggled out of the gate Thursday, allowing the first three batters he faced to reach base before he was able to get Michael Harris looking for a strikeout. After Mauricio Dubon notched an RBI single in the next at-bat, Dominic Smith hit a 91.6 mph line drive up the middle and it hit off May's right ankle and rolled into foul territory for a double. May was able to remain in the contest for three more batters, but he was ultimately lifted for Justin Bruihl with two outs in the frame. May finished his day having allowed five runs on five hits and two walks while striking out one over two-thirds of an inning.
JULY 3 • ROTOWIRE
Ready to go for next start May (back) is slated to start Thursday's series finale in Atlanta.
Impact May didn't end up pitching this past week after experiencing back tightness coming out of his previous start June 21 in Kansas City, but the Cardinals are already considering him ready to go the next time his turn in the rotation comes up Thursday. Before getting knocked around for six runs over two innings in his outing against Kansas City, May had been St. Louis' top-performing starter for more than two months. In his preceding 12 starts from April 10 through June 15, May went 5-4 with a 2.54 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 68:18 K:BB across 74.1 innings.
JUNE 29 • ROTOWIRE
Next start getting skipped The Cardinals will skip May's (back) turn in the rotation Saturday against Miami, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
Impact May has been dealing with lower-back tightness since tossing a complete-game shutout against the Padres on June 15, which may have played a factor in his six-run, two-inning performance against Kansas City on Sunday. Delaying the 28-year-old's next appearance will give him extra time to heal and move Andre Pallante up a day to start Saturday on four days' rest.
JUNE 27 • ROTOWIRE
Knocked around in short start May did not factor into the decision Sunday against the Royals, allowing six runs on six hits and one walk while striking out two over two innings.
Impact May endured his shortest outing of the season Sunday, tossing 44 pitches to complete two innings before being lifted. The right-hander allowed two runs in the first inning and further unraveled in the second, serving up a pair of two-run homers to Nick Loftin and Jac Caglianone. Despite the early damage, May surprisingly exited with the lead thanks to St. Louis erupting for nine runs over the first two innings. The outing was a stark contrast from his recent form, as he entered Sunday coming off back-to-back scoreless starts, including a one-hit shutout in his previous appearance. May will take a 4.30 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 77:22 K:BB to face Miami at home in his next scheduled start.

JUNE 22 • ROTOWIRE
Tosses one-hit shutout May (5-6) earned the win Monday against the Padres, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out nine over a complete-game shutout.
Impact May delivered arguably the best start of his career Monday, firing his first complete game in 71 major-league starts. The right-hander flirted with perfection into the seventh inning before Fernando Tatis drew a leadoff walk, and a few batters later Manny Machado lined a single to break up the no-hit bid. Despite that, May retired the final seven batters he faced to complete the shutout. The 28-year-old has now recorded nine strikeouts in three of his last four starts and appears to be finding another gear as the season progresses. He owns a 3.75 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 75:21 K:BB across 81.2 innings and is scheduled to face Kansas City on the road in his next outing.
JUNE 16 • ROTOWIRE
Blanks Mets in stellar win May (4-6) earned the win Tuesday against New York, tossing six scoreless innings on four hits and one walk while striking out six.
Impact May was at his best Tuesday, working a season-high 101 pitches with 70 going for strikes and racking up an impressive 31 called and swinging strikes. It was the right-hander's first scoreless start of 2026, and he's now recorded a quality start in eight of his last 11 outings. May now owns a 4.21 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 66:20 K:BB through 72.2 innings and lines up for a home outing against San Diego next.
JUNE 10 • ROTOWIRE
Racks up nine K's vs. Rangers May did not factor into the decision Tuesday against the Rangers, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out nine over 5.2 innings.
Impact After carrying a no-hitter into the eighth inning in his last start, May came out dominant again Tuesday -- piling up eight strikeouts through the first four innings. The right-hander was one out away from another quality start before Alejandro Osuna delivered a go-ahead RBI knock in the sixth inning, forcing his exit. May has still not recorded a win since April 21 and he now owns a 4.59 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 60:19 K:BB across 66.2 innings. He's slated to face the Mets in his next start.
JUNE 3 • ROTOWIRE
Loses no-hitter then game Wednesday May (3-6) took the loss Wednesday, giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits over seven innings as the Cardinals fell 2-1 to the Brewers. He struck out nine without walking a bat...
Impact The right-hander took a no-hitter into the eighth inning until Garrett Mitchell spoiled it with a leadoff double, but after Luis Rengifo followed with a bunt single, May got the hook and had to watch as both runners came around to score. May had to settle for his seventh quality start of the year and a season high in strikeouts, but he remains winless over his last six outings. Since a rough couple starts to begin 2026, he's posted a 3.02 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 44:14 K:BB over his last 53.2 innings. He'll try to get back in the win column in his next trip to the mound, which lines up to come at home early next week against the Rangers.
MAY 28 • ROTOWIRE
Falls to Pittsburgh May (3-5) took the loss Thursday against the Pirates, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks over 5.1 innings. He struck out seven.
Impact May held Pittsburgh to two runs through his first five innings but he'd run into trouble in the sixth, where four straight Pirates would reach safely with one out, ultimately resulting in two more runs. Prior to Thursday, May had delivered quality starts in four straight outings. His ERA now sits at an even 5.00 with a 1.43 WHIP and 42:17 K:BB across 54 innings. May is currently lined up to face the Brewers on the road his next time out.
MAY 21 • ROTOWIRE
Goes six innings in no-decision May didn't factor into the decision Friday against the Royals, allowing three runs on four hits and four walks across six innings. He struck out three.
Impact May has gone winless in his last four starts (0-2), but he's posted a quality start in each of those outings. He's now allowed three or fewer earned runs in each of his last seven outings, posting a 2.83 ERA with a 1.19 WHIP and 28:12 K:BB across 41.1 frames over that stretch. May will aim to keep this strong run going in his next start, scheduled against the Pirates next week.
MAY 16 • ROTOWIRE
Tallies season-high seven punchouts May (3-4) took the loss against San Diego on Saturday, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits and two walks while striking out seven batters over six innings.
Impact May held San Diego scoreless for four innings before giving up three runs (one of which was unearned) in the fifth. That was the only frame during which the Padres scored on May, but it was enough to send the right-hander to his second straight loss. Nonetheless, there were certainly positive takeaways for May, as he totaled an impressive 15 whiffs and notched a season-high seven strikeouts. He also posted his third straight quality start and his fifth such outing over his past six appearances. May began the campaign by getting rocked for 13 runs over his first 7.1 frames, but he's since turned things around dramatically to lower his ERA to a much more acceptable 4.85. He'll look to continue trending upward in his next start, which lines up to be a home matchup versus Kansas City.
MAY 10 • ROTOWIRE
Quality start in loss Sunday May (3-3) took the loss Sunday against the Dodgers, allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts across six innings.
Impact After getting tagged for 13 runs across 7.1 innings in his first two starts of the season, May has posted four quality starts in his last five tries. The right-hander dealt with plenty of traffic on the bases early Sunday, but he generated three double plays in the first four innings. May has plus stuff, but he's not getting many strikeouts, with just a 25:9 K:BB and 5.15 ERA across 36.2 innings. He's in the third percentile in whiff rate despite averaging 97.0 mph with his fastball. May has pitched better than his results and is lined up to take on the Padres in San Diego during next weekend's four-game set.
MAY 4 • ROTOWIRE
Another positive showing May took a no-decision Monday against the Pirates, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks in six innings. He struck out two.
Impact Just one of the hits allowed went for extra bases, as May continued to put his awful start to the season in the rear-view mirror. Although the right-hander gave up 13 runs over his first 7.1 frames, he's pitched at least five innings while giving up two runs or fewer in four consecutive starts en route to producing a 1.93 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 15:4 K:BB during that stretch. May still has a 5.28 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 22:7 K:BB over 30.2 frames for the season, and a tall task against the Dodgers awaits him in his next scheduled outing.
APRIL 28 • ROTOWIRE
Sharp in Tuesday's win May (3-2) picked up the win Tuesday, allowing one run on six hits and one walk over 5.1 innings in a 5-3 victory over the Marlins. He struck out five.
Impact The right-hander served up a solo shot to Jakob Marsee to lead off the bottom of the first inning, but May cruised from there, eventually getting lifted after 97 pitches (59 strikes). He saw his quality start streak end at two, but after a shaky beginning to his St. Louis tenure he's delivered a 1.56 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 13:2 K:BB over 17.1 innings in his last three trips to the mound. May will look to keep rolling in his next outing, which lines up to come on the road early next week in Pittsburgh.
APRIL 22 • ROTOWIRE
Stingy in second win May (2-2) picked up the win in Wednesday's 5-3 victory over the Guardians, allowing one run on six hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out four.
Impact The right-hander was far from dominant, managing a paltry two swinging strikes among his 91 pitches (59 total strikes), but May limited the damage in his second straight quality start and second straight win. It's a remarkable turnaround from his first two outings of 2026, but his margin for error seems very thin without missing more bats. May will take a 6.98 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 15:4 K:BB through 19.1 innings into his next start, which lines up to come on the road early next week in Miami.
APRIL 15 • ROTOWIRE
Goes six strong, picks up first win May (1-2) earned the win Friday against the Red Sox, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and no walks with four strikeouts across six innings.
Impact Facing his former team, May was able to get on the board with his first win as a member of the Cardinals. He flirted with trouble in the fourth inning, allowing two of the first three hitters of the inning to reach on singles. Boston then pushed one run across on an error before Marcelo Mayer reached on an infield single. Trevor Story then stole home to give Boston a 2-1 lead, but May was able to stop the bleeding with an inning-ending groundout. He then set down the Red Sox in order in the fifth and sixth and left with a 3-2 lead, which was preserved by the St. Louis bullpen. After two ugly starts against the Rays and Tigers to open the season, May now owns a 9.45 ERA, 1.80 WHIP and 11:3 K:BB across 13.1 innings. He's slated to face the Guardians at home Wednesday.
APRIL 11 • ROTOWIRE
Mauled by Tigers May (0-2) took the loss Saturday, surrendering seven runs on seven hits and two walks over 3.1 innings as the Cardinals were downed 11-6 by the Tigers. He struck out four.
Impact A two-run homer by Kerry Carpenter in the first inning set the tone, as Detroit ended up slugging four long balls in total on the afternoon, with two of them coming against May. The right-hander tossed 79 pitches (48 strikes) in another rough outing to begin his tenure with the Cards, and through 7.1 innings he's stumbled to a 15.95 ERA, 2.73 WHIP and 7:3 K:BB. May will try to right the hip in his next start, which lines up to come at home next weekend against the team he ended the 2025 campaign with, the Red Sox.
