INJURIES

Re-ups with Tampa Hess (illness) re-signed Nov. 11 with the Rays on a minor-league contract.
Impact Shortly before he officially elected free agency Oct. 15, Hess revealed that he was diagnosed with a cancerous germ cell tumor in the center of his chest. The Rays' decision to re-sign Hess earlier this month implies confidence in his recovery, and the pitcher himself was a similarly upbeat about his health in his most recent update on his personal Twitter account. Hess will hope to gain clearance from doctors in the coming months, but at least for the time being, his availability for the start of spring training is uncertain.

Impact The 28-year-old right-hander expressed confidence that through treatment, the cancerous tumor will hopefully be eradicated and allow him to resume his baseball career. Hess spent time in the Marlins and Rays organizations in 2021, appearing in 15 games at the MLB level and posting a 9.90 ERA and 2.15 WHIP in 20 innings.

Goes unclaimed on waivers Hess accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Durham on Tuesday after going unclaimed on waivers, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports.
Impact Hess has been DFA'd three times this season, and for the second time in less than a month he's agreed to stay in the Tampa Bay organization after losing his spot on the 40-man roster. Hess allowed six earned runs, including three homers in his lone two-inning appearance during his latest stint with the big club.
SEPTEMBER 14, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
DFA'd again The Rays designated Hess for assignment Wednesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact A prior report indicated Hess was sent to Triple-A Durham to make room on the active roster for reliever Matt Wisler's (finger) return from the 10-day injured list, but Hess will also lose his spot on the 40-man roster since he doesn't have any minor-league options remaining. Assuming he clears waivers, Hess will be outrighted to Durham within a few days and should be available for the affiliate.

Returns to minors Hess was optioned to Triple-A Durham on Wednesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact Hess entered Tuesday's game against Boston with a comfortable lead and gave up six runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out two in two innings. Although he managed to keep the lead intact, he'll head back to Durham after right-hander Matt Wisler (finger) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Wednesday.

Earns big-league call-up The Rays selected Hess' contract from Triple-A Durham ahead of Monday's game against the Red Sox, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact Tampa Bay already had an opening on the 40-man roster due to Chris Mazza's recent placement on the COVID-19-related injured list at Triple-A, while Dietrich Enns was optioned to Durham to clear a spot on the 28-man active roster for Hess. Hess may only be with the Rays for a couple of days to give the team a fresh arm out of the bullpen; according to Topkin, manager Kevin Cash said that reliever Matt Wisler (finger) should be ready to return from the 10-day injured list Tuesday or Wednesday.

Outrighted to Triple-A Hess cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Durham on Tuesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact Hess was designated for assignment by the rays on Sunday after spending one day in the majors, and he'll remain in the organization after going through waivers unclaimed. The right-hander has 14 appearances in the big leagues with the Marlins this season and has an 8.00 ERA, 1.89 WHIP and 16:10 K:BB over 18 innings.

DFA'd by Tampa Bay The Rays designated Hess for assignment Sunday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact Tampa Bay removed Hess from the 40-man roster after a spot was needed for pitcher Chris Archer (forearm), who was activated from the 60-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start Sunday against the White Sox. Hess, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Durham on Saturday, didn't make an appearance out of the Tampa Bay bullpen during his brief stay on the active roster.
AUGUST 22, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Contract selected by Rays Hess' contract was selected by the Rays on Saturday, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports.
Impact The right-hander signed a minor-league deal with Tampa Bay on Thursday, and he'll quickly join the big-league roster after Chris Mazza was sent down Saturday. Hess made 14 appearances (one start) with the Marlins earlier in the year and posted an 8.00 ERA and 1.89 WHIP in 18 innings.
AUGUST 21, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Links up with Rays Hess signed a minor-league contract with the Rays on Thursday, Steve Adams of MLBTradeRumors.com reports.
Impact After linking up with the Rays over the winter on a minor-league deal, Hess registered a 2.81 ERA and 1.03 WHIP over 13 appearances (two starts) at Triple-A Durham before being dealt to the Marlins in July. Hess proceeded to post an 8.00 ERA and 1.89 WHIP in 18 innings with Miami at the big-league level before being outrighted off the 40-man roster and being granted his release. Given his strong results at Durham earlier this season, Hess' decision to reconnect with Tampa Bay comes as little surprise. The Rays will see if he can return to his early-season form at Triple-A before considering him for a September call-up.

Elects free agency Hess cleared waivers and elected free agency Tuesday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
Impact Hess was cast off Miami's 40-man roster Sunday, and he'll choose not to accept an outright assignment to Triple-A Jacksonville. The right-hander posted an 8.00 ERA and 1.89 WHIP in 18 innings across 14 appearances (one start) in the majors this year and will now attempt to land an opportunity with another club.

Loses 40-man spot The Marlins designated Hess for assignment prior to Sunday's game against the Cubs, Bally Sports Florida reports.
Impact Hess was cast off the 40-man roster to clear a spot for pitcher Elieser Hernandez (quadriceps), who was reinstated from the 60-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start versus Chicago. After being acquired from the Rays in early July, Hess appeared in 14 games (one start) for Miami, posting an 8.00 ERA and 1.89 WHIP in 18 innings.

Hammered in spot start Hess (2-2) yielded seven runs on six hits while taking the loss against Colorado on Sunday. He recorded three outs and did not register a strikeout.
Impact Hess coughed up a three-run homer to C.J. Cron in the first inning. He then gave up four runs on two homers without recording an out in the second before he was yanked. His season ERA shot up to 7.64 through 17.2 innings this season.

AUGUST 8, 2021 • Associated Press
Gets start in bullpen day Hess is scheduled to start Sunday's game against the Rockies in what's expected to be a bullpen day, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
Impact With Trevor Rogers (personal) on the family medical emergency list and four other rotation options on the injured list, the Marlins will turn to their 17th different starting pitcher of the season in Hess, who has posted a 4.32 ERA and 1.50 WHIP across 16.2 innings out of the bullpen. Prior to 2021, Hess had been working as a starter for the Orioles, so he could have a slightly longer leash than most relievers do when deployed as an "opener" in a bullpen game. Even so, don't expect Hess to work much more than two or three frames before being pulled from the contest.

Takes loss in relief Saturday Hess (2-1) was tagged with the relief loss Saturday against the Yankees after allowing one run on one hit and two walks across one inning, striking out two.
Impact Hess closed things out in the fourth but was unable to slam the door on the fifth inning, as he was lifted right after intentionally walking David Hess to load the bases with two outs. The 28-year-old right-hander hasn't looked at his best since getting traded to the Marlins in early July, posting a 5.27 ERA with a 13:8 K:BB across 13.2 innings (nine outings).
