Opinion: Optioning Daniel Schneemann To Triple-A Columbus Makes No Sense

Demoted to Triple-A
The Guardians optioned Schneemann to Triple-A Columbus on Friday, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.
Impact
Schneemann had been with the Guardians all season, but he's slashed just .155/.222/.213 since May 1. His roster spot will be filled by Angel Martinez (foot), who is back from the injured list.

Sitting against righty again
Schneemann is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Marlins.
Impact
The left-handed-hitting Schneemann will hit the bench for a second straight matchup versus a right-handed starting pitcher (Tyler Phillips). The Guardians have openings in the everyday lineup at third base and in the outfield while Jose Ramirez (hand) and Angel Martinez (foot) are on the shelf, but Schneemann may have to settle for a part-time role while he's slashed just .161/.198/.253 with a 29.7 percent strikeout rate since the start of June. Gabriel Arias appears to have gained traction at third base, and over the last two games, Petey Halpin has drawn starts over Schneemann for the final spot in the outfield alongside Steven Kwan and Kahlil Watson.

Regaining playing time
Schneemann will start in center field and bat seventh in Thursday's game against the Twins.
Impact
Schneemann started just twice in a seven-game stretch from June 27 through last Friday, but the Guardians may be preparing to give him another look as a near-everyday player. He's been included in the lineup in four of the Guardians' last five games, making two starts at third base, one at shortstop and now one in center. The outfield could represent Schneemann's clearest path to playing time in the short term after the Guardians optioned rookie Cooper Ingle to Triple-A Columbus on Thursday.

Sitting again Sunday
Schneemann is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mariners, Chris Assenheimer of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports.
Impact
It's the second straight game on the bench against a right-handed pitcher for Schneemann, who has just one hit in his past 24 at-bats and has a .402 OPS through 19 games in June. Prospect Cooper Ingle was promoted Friday and Chase DeLauter (rib) was reinstated from the injured list Sunday, which could be enough to relegate Schneemann to more of a part-time role.

On bench Saturday
Schneemann isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against Seattle, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.
Impact
Schneemann will take a day to recollect himself after going just 1-for-24 at the plate with 10 strikeouts across his last eight games. Gabriel Arias will pick up a start at third base and bat seventh.

Idle against southpaw
Schneemann is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the White Sox.
Impact
Southpaw Anthony Kay is on the bump for the White Sox, so Schneemann will retreat to the bench along with fellow left-handed batters Kahlil Watson and Steven Kwan. Schneemann is coming off a rough weekend series in Houston, where he went 0-for-12 with seven strikeouts to bring his season average down to .213.

Launches grand slam in loss
Schneemann went 1-for-4 with a grand slam in Wednesday's loss to the Brewers.
Impact
The Guardians' only runs of the game came off of Schneemann's moon shot to right field off of Brandon Sproat in the fourth. Schneemann started the game at third base, filling in for the injured Jose Ramirez (hand). The 29-year-old could be a candidate to fill in everyday for Ramirez, but he has been utilized all over the infield and outfield for Stephen Vogt's team this year so they value his versatility.

Likely candidate at third base
Schneemann is the most likely candidate to fill in at third base after Jose Ramirez suffered a fractured left hamate bone Saturday, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.
Impact
Schneemann already entered the game for injured outfielder Chase DeLauter (ribs) but was moved to the hot corner to cover for Ramirez. He's the most likely candidate currently rostered to fill in, having made 43 career starts and 63 appearances at third base. David Fry is another on the current roster, but he's made just seven career appearances spanning 18 innings. If Guardians manager Stephen Vogt wants to leave Schneemann in a versatile role -- which the manager values -- the team could bring Gabriel Arias (hamstring) off the 60-day IL to play third.

ROTOWIRE
Launches two-run homer
Schneemann went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Saturday's win over the Tigers.
Impact
Schneemann entered the game at the bottom of the first inning as a pinch-runner for the injured Chase DeLauter (ribs), and he'd end up playing a key role offensively by launching a two-run shot in the bottom of the third inning. This was Schneemann's fifth long ball of the season, and his first since April 27.

ROTOWIRE
Logs two hits, RBI in win
Schneemann started in center field and went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a stolen base in Saturday's 6-0 win over Texas.
Impact
Schneemann made what has become a rare contribution to a Cleveland win. The multi-hit effort was his first since April 29, when he was slashing .321/.391/.564 through 26 games. His fortunes have turned since. Schneemann entered Saturday with a .146/.231/.171 slash line with five RBI over the previous 24 games. Despite the lack of production, Schneemann's versatility keeps him relevant.
