Struggles with control
Ponce de Leon allowed two earned runs on three hits and four walks while striking out two across 4.2 innings Sunday against the Reds. He did not factor into the decision.
Impact
Ponce de Leon held the Reds' bats in check, but struggled with control issues. This began immediately, as he surrendered a walk to Nick Castellanos in the first inning, who then crossed the plate on a two-run home run by Eugenio Suarez. Though those were the only runs Ponce de Leon surrendered, he was unable to pitch deep enough into the contest to qualify for the win, despite exiting the contest with a 3-2 lead. He now owns a 5.25 ERA and 17:10 K:BB across 12 innings for the season. Due to the number of doubleheaders on the Cardinals' schedule, Ponce de Leon should start on a regular basis, and he lines up for his next work Friday against Cleveland.

Scuffles in start
Ponce de Leon (0-2) took the loss against the Cubs on Tuesday, pitching 3.1 innings and allowing two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out seven.
Impact
The right-hander flashed his impressive strikeout ability in the outing, but he struggled with his control and departed with one out in the fourth inning. He threw only 44 of 79 pitches for strikes and yielded a triple and a home run among his three hits. While Ponce de Leon has struck out 15 batters in 7.1 innings this season, he has also walked six batters and served up a pair of long balls. Still, he figures to stick in the rotation given the numerous double-headers the Cardinals will play in the weeks to come. His next start is scheduled for Sunday at home against Cincinnati.

Starting Tuesday
Ponce de Leon will start Tuesday's game against the Cubs, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
Impact
The young right-hander will get the call for the one non-doubleheader day of the five-game set against the Cubs. Ponce de Leon was originally slated to start Aug. 7 versus Chicago before the team's COVID-19 breakout suspended play until Saturday. Ponce de Leon has a chance to make a case for sticking in the rotation the rest of the way if he can put together some strong performances while Carlos Martinez (undisclosed) remains on the injured list, but he'll presumably have to prove more effective than Kwang-Hyun Kim, who is also entering the rotation with his start in the first game of Monday's doubleheader.

Cardinals-Cubs postponed Friday
Ponce de Leon won't start as scheduled Friday against the Cubs since the game was postponed following more positive COVID-19 test results from the Cardinals, Mark Saxon of The Athl...
Impact
The Cardinals were set to resume their season Friday after the past two series were postponed following the team's COVID-19 outbreak last week, but it appears they aren't out of the woods yet and produced another positive test result. It remains unclear what this means for the rest of the series against the Cubs, but it's a troublesome development with the Cardinals already out of action since July 29.

Announced as Friday's starter
Ponce de Leon will start Friday's game against the Cubs, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
Impact
In the Cardinals' first game back on the field since their long layoff, Ponce de Leon will take the mound since he was the most recent starter to pitch. In order to preserve the pitching staff's long-term health, manager Mike Shildt elected to push Jack Flaherty's start back to Sunday or Monday. Ponce de Leon has made two appearances (one start) for St. Louis to begin the season, allowing three runs on two hits and three walks while striking out eight over four innings.

Mixed bag in first start
Ponce de Leon (0-1) took the loss against Minnesota on Wednesday, allowing three runs on two hits and three walks while striking out eight in 3.2 innings.
Impact
Ponce de Leon was far from efficient in his first start of the campaign, tossing 85 pitches (52 for strikes) in his 3.2 innings. Part of that can be attributed to Minnesota's knack for fouling off pitches -- they racked up 19 foul balls against Ponce de Leon -- though the right-hander's three free passes didn't help. Despite the loss, Ponce de Leon gave up only two hits while racking up an impressive eight strikeouts, so he could stick in the rotation with Miles Mikolas (forearm) out for the season.
