INJURIES

Officially promoted to majors The Mariners selected Young's contract from Triple-A Tacoma on Saturday.
Impact Young is set to make his major-league debut after a strong start to the season in Triple-A, where he is slashing .278/.391/.463 with four steals, five home runs and 26 RBI in 245 plate appearances. With J.P. Crawford cemented as the Mariners' starting shortstop, Young will compete with Dylan Moore and Miles Mastrobuoni for regular playing time at the keystone.

Headed to big leagues The Mariners are expected to promote Young from Triple-A Tacoma this weekend, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.
Impact Young is considered one of the best prospects in the Mariners' farm system and has been in Triple-A all season, slashing .278/.391/.463 with five homers, 26 RBI, 39 runs and four stolen bases through 243 plate appearances. He has maintained a strong batting average throughout his ascent through the minor leagues and has surpassed 20 steals in each full season he's played. The 21-year-old only has experience at the middle infield positions, and with J.P. Crawford cemented at shortstop, Young's clearest path to playing time is at the keystone.

Moves past arm issue Young (arm) will be available off the bench for Wednesday's Cactus League game against the Athletics, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
Impact According to Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times, Young had been limited in some workouts in the first couple weeks of spring training due to a sore right arm, but he's already appeared in three Cactus League contests, going 2-for-6 with a run scored. He's yet to serve as anything more than a designated hitter in those games, but his ability to play suggests that he's not in any real danger of missing the start of the minor-league season.

Dealing with arm soreness Young has been limited so far in spring training due to a sore right arm, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
Impact Young appeared as a pinch hitter during Seattle's spring opener and remained in the game as the DH. He didn't play in the team's second Cactus League contest, though that wouldn't be unusual regardless of the arm issue. Given his ability to swing the bat, Young's injury doesn't appear to be a serious concern, though it wouldn't be surprising if the Mariners take a cautious approach with the young infielder. Young racked up 551 plate appearances at the Double-A level last season and could make his MLB debut sometime during the upcoming campaign.
FEBRUARY 23 • ROTOWIRE
Steady at Double-A Young is slashing .271/.369/.390 with nine home runs, 23 steals and a 15.8 percent strikeout rate in 124 games for Double-A Arkansas.
Impact Young, the fourth-youngest qualified hitter at Double-A, could be passable at shortstop or quite good at second base for the Mariners in a couple years. He has a very advanced knowledge of the strike zone and logged an impressive 81.4 percent contact rate, but he doesn't hit the ball hard very often (22.0 Hard%) and projects to offer modest power, especially if he calls T-Mobile Park home. If everything works out, the lefty-hitting Young could produce similarly to guys like Brice Turang and Bryson Stott.
SEPTEMBER 17, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Thriving early in spring Young went 1-for-2 with a solo home run in the Mariners' Cactus League loss to the White Sox on Thursday.
Impact The precocious 20-year-old extended his spring hitting streak to three games with his fifth-inning solo shot. The fact Young is enjoying early success against big-league arms this spring isn't necessarily surprising, considering he's done nothing but hit over his first four minor-league stops in his first two professional seasons. Young has slashed .286/.402/.858 across stints ranging from Rookie ball to High-A, complementing those eye-catching figures with equally impressive 14.2 percent and 14.5 percent walk and strikeout rates, respectively. Young likely doesn't have much left to prove at High-A Everett after a productive 48-game stint there last season, so he's almost certainly ticketed to start the campaign at Double-A Arkansas.
MARCH 1, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Not slowed by High-A pitching Young is hitting .285/.409/.520 with five home runs, four steals and more walks (25) than strikeouts (24) in 31 games for High-A Everett.
Impact While Young may be benefitting from the favorable home park at Everett, his elite strike zone awareness as a recently-turned 20-year-old at High-A portends success even as he reaches a more pitcher-friendly environment at Double-A Arkansas in 2024. The Mariners have an impressive wave of talented position players in the lower levels, several of whom also play shortstop, but Young should be able to handle any infield position and has the bat to profile at third base or second base if necessary.
AUGUST 21, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
On track at Single-A Young is slashing .267/.396/.429 with five home runs, 17 steals and more walks (54) than strikeouts (52) through 78 games for Single-A Modesto.
Impact Young, who turns 20 at the end of July, has made 69 starts at shortstop and eight starts at the keystone in his first full season in pro ball. He also saw brief action at second base last year in addition to his shortstop duties. Young's hit tool has been as advertised. He is using the whole field (36.3 Oppo%) and has limited the groundballs (42.1 percent) while also being a bit unlucky (.303 BABIP) on balls in play.
