Receives cortisone shot
Schmidt (elbow) received a cortisone injection Monday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
Impact
Schmidt will be out of action for quite a while, as he landed on the 60-day injured list with an elbow strain in late March. The team is optimistic that he'll be able to begin throwing later this week or sometime next week following the shot, but he'll still need to go through a lengthy recovery process before returning to game action.

Getting second opinion on elbow
Manager Aaron Boone said Sunday that Schmidt (elbow) will seek a second opinion before the Yankees decide the next step in the right-hander's rehab program, Marly Rivera of ESPN.co...
Impact
According to Boone, Schmidt is still exhibiting symptoms of the extensor strain he sustained in late February, which has prevented him from starting up a throwing program for a couple weeks as had been anticipated. Boone noted that he remains optimistic Schmidt will avoid surgery to address the elbow injury, but the 25-year-old's lack of meaningful progress in his recovery thus far is concerning nonetheless. Even if the second opinion brings positive news, Schmidt likely won't be ready to make his 2021 debut until at least late May after he was placed on the 60-day injured list prior to Opening Day.

Placed on 60-day IL
Schmidt (elbow) was placed on the 60-day injured list Saturday.
Impact
Schmidt suffered an extensor strain in his right elbow in late February and has yet to resume throwing. While manager Aaron Boone said Thursday that Schmidt's return to throwing could be "imminent," the right-hander will miss extended time to begin the regular season while he builds back up.

Yet to resume throwing
Schmidt (elbow) is still experiencing discomfort and hasn't returned to throwing, Max Goodman of Sports Illustrated reports.
Impact
Schmidt is reportedly still not feeling 100 percent after being diagnosed with a common extensor strain in his right elbow, and the organization doesn't want him to begin a throwing program until he's completely asymptomatic. Manager Aaron Boone indicated Thursday that Schmidt's return to throwing could be "imminent," but a clearer picture of his timeframe has yet to be announced.

Still not throwing
Schmidt (elbow) has not yet resumed throwing but is "getting close," Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
Impact
Schmidt has been out since late February after suffering an extensor strain in his right elbow. Though the injury is believed to be minor, the right-hander remains on the shelf and is no longer in the running for an Opening Day rotation spot. He has, however, reportedly been making progress and appears likely to start a throwing program soon.

Should begin throwing soon
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday that Schmidt (elbow) is close to resuming a throwing program, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports.
Impact
Schmidt has apparently demonstrated some notable progress since the Yankees shut him down March 6 with a common extensor strain in his right elbow, so he looks like he could be cleared to begin playing catch off flat ground by the end of the week. Due to the time he's already missed with the injury, however, Schmidt won't be in contention for an Opening Day rotation spot with the Yankees. Domingo German and Deivi Garcia are currently vying for the fifth starter's role.

Not yet ready to return
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Saturday that Schmidt (elbow) is at least a week away from throwing, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports.
Impact
Schmidt has been dealing with a minor extensor strain in his elbow to begin spring training, and the Yankees have been bringing him up slowly as a result. Although the team hasn't expressed significant concern regarding his injury, the right-hander likely won't be available for the first few weeks of the regular season.
