Bad news from initial MRI Horton (forearm) will get a second opinion from Dr. Keith Meister in Texas on Tuesday after an initial MRI did not yield favorable results, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports.

Impact Horton exited his last start and was subsequently placed on the 15-day injured list due to a right forearm strain. It sounds like the initial prognosis points to a long-term injury and perhaps surgery, but more will be known after the hurler gets a second opinion Tuesday. The Cubs have yet to announce who will take Horton's spot in the rotation Wednesday against the Rays, but Colin Rea is one candidate.

Impact Taillon had trouble keeping the ball in the yard Monday, making two costly mistakes that accounted for all three of the earned runs he surrendered. The 34-year-old had a solid outing otherwise as he worked through six innings and kept the Cubs in the game. His season-long ERA now sits at 2.53 through two starts with his next scheduled start set for Sunday against the Pirates.

The 24-year-old might be getting into an offensive groove, though his playing time figures to trend downward to a degree once Seiya Suzuki (knee) is able to return. Suzuki is expected back Friday, giving Shaw the rest of the week as Chicago's top option in right field. He should still cover right on occasion once Suzuki is back, particularly in the early going as the Cubs may want to ease Suzuki back into action.

Lands on IL with bicep strain The Cubs placed Boyd on the 15-day injured list Monday with a left bicep strain, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Impact Boyd was terrific in his last start against the Angels, but evidently some time between then and now his pitching arm started to bother him. He will be eligible to return later this month, but with the nature of the injury, it's possible he'll need more time. It's another blow to a Cubs rotation that also recently lose Cade Horton (forearm) to an arm injury. Javier Assad will start Tuesday versus the Rays in Boyd's place.

Recalled, entering rotation The Cubs recalled Assad from Triple-A Iowa on Monday and will have him start Tuesday's game at Tampa Bay, Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic reports.

Impact With Matthew Boyd (biceps) and Cade Horton (forearm) landing on the injured list within the past two days, the Cubs will turn to Assad to fill one of the two openings in the rotation. After falling short in his bid for a spot on the Cubs' Opening Day roster, Assad has made two starts for Iowa this season, giving up seven earned runs on 14 hits and six walks while striking out seven over seven innings. The right-hander has a much stronger track record over parts of four seasons in the majors, accruing a 3.43 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 9.6 K-BB% over 331 innings.
