Impact Tromp was designated for assignment over the weekend and cleared waivers. Instead of reporting to Triple-A Gwinnett, Tromp has chosen to see what else is out there on the open market. The 30-year-old catcher has a career .224/.235/.385 slash line across 162 big-league plate appearances.

Tromp ended up being the casualty, as he'll surrendered his spot on the 26-man active roster to Tromp while also losing his spot on the 40-man roster since he doesn't have minor-league options remaining. Atlanta is hopeful Tromp will go unclaimed off waivers and stick around in the organization as catching depth at Triple-A Gwinnett. Tromp appeared in just two of Atlanta's first nine games while Drake Baldwin dominated the playing time behind the plate.

Impact Sean Murphy (ribs) will begin the season on the IL, opening the door for Baldwin to make his big-league debut. Had Murphy not been injured, Tromp likely would have been the No. 2 backstop anyway, as he's out of minor-league options, but if Baldwin shows he's ready for the majors over the first weeks of the year, Tromp could be squeezed off the roster when Murphy returns.

If Atlanta wants to keep 35-year-old Travis d'Arnaud from breaking down while Sean Murphy (oblique) is on the shelf, Tromp will likely start more than once even five days or so, but having a pitcher like Sale talk up his game-calling skills can only help his outlook for playing time. Whether he offers anything as a hitter is another question, though -- the 29-year-old backstop went 0-for-2 on Sunday, and he slashed .210/.336/.384 with 10 homers over 65 games for Triple-A Gwinnett in 2023.
