Will begin season in Double-A
Rafaela will begin the 2023 season with Double-A Portland, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.
Impact
Many expected Rafaela to open in Triple-A after finishing the 2022 campaign with the Sea Dogs, but the 22-year-old will get more action in the Eastern League before moving onto Triple-A. A source tells Starr that the organization wants the right-handed hitter to work on his approach at the plate without having to adjust to the higher level. Even with the outfielder opening the season in Double-A, there's a very good chance Rafaela could spend time with the major-league club before the season comes to a close.

Shipped to minor-league camp
The Red Sox optioned Rafaela to Triple-A Worcester on Monday.
Impact
Rafaela established himself as one of Boston's top outfield prospects last season after slashing .299/.342/.538 with 21 home runs and 28 stolen bases in 518 plate appearances between stops at High-A Greenville and Double-A Portland. The 22-year-old earned himself a spot on the 40-man roster this offseason along with an invitation to big-league spring training. Though he fell short in his long-shot bid for a spot on Boston's Opening Day roster, Rafaela could push his way to the big leagues at some point later in 2023 if he continues to mash at the highest level of the minors.

To be used mostly in CF
Rafaela will see most of his playing time in center field this spring, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.
Impact
Rafaela has experience all over the diamond and will also see some action at shortstop this spring. However, Red Sox manager Alex Cora views the top prospect's defense in center field as "plus plus" and that's where he'll be stationed more often than not. The 22-year-old was added to Boston's 40-man roster over the offseason following a breakout 2022 campaign which saw him post an .880 OPS with 21 homers and 28 steals between High-A and Double-A.
