Moves up depth chart
Carrasco is likely sixth on the Yankees' starting-pitcher depth chart due to injuries to Gerrit Cole (elbow) and Luis Gil (lat), Max Goodman of NJ.com reports.
Impact
Carrasco is in camp as a non-roster invitee and initially seemed to be a longshot to open the regular season with the Yankees, but his signing has taken on more importance since both Cole and Gil are expected to miss significant time due to their injuries. Marcus Stroman and Will Warren are the most likely candidates to fill the vacated rotation spots at the start of the season, which would leave Carrasco as the next man up should another injury occur or should New York need a spot starter at some point. Carrasco isn't currently on the 40-man roster, and he'd need to accept a minor-league assignment at the outset of the campaign if he doesn't break camp with the big club. The veteran righty has struggled mightily with a 6.18 ERA (5.36 FIP) over 193.2 regular-season innings over the past two campaigns, but he's performed pretty well this spring, allowing two runs on four hits with a 6:5 K:BB over 7.2 frames.

Inks NRI deal with NYY
The Yankees signed Carrasco to a minor-league contract Monday that includes an invitation to spring training, Jack Curry of YES Network reports.
Impact
Carrasco made 21 starts with the Guardians last season, putting up a 5.64 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 89:33 K:BB over 103.2 innings before being removed from their 40-man roster in September. Slated to turn 38 in March, Carrasco appears to be a long shot to make the Yankees' Opening Day roster but would give them some veteran rotation insurance at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Outrighted to Columbus
Carrasco cleared waivers Friday and accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Columbus.
Impact
After being dropped from Cleveland's 40-man roster Tuesday, Carrasco had the right to enter free agency. Instead, the 37-year-old righty will stick with the organization he's spent 12 seasons with and finish the year in Triple-A. His demotion to Columbus acts somewhat as a promotion, as he most recently pitched for Double-A Akron while working his way back from a hip strain.

Removed from 40-man roster
The Guardians designated Carrasco for assignment Tuesday.
Impact
Carrasco is in the middle of rehabbing his injured hip that he suffered in the first half of August. He had just began a rehab Assignment Friday with Double-A Akron, allowing two runs in three innings. The 37-year-old's struggles in 2024, hip injury, and emergence of rookie Joey Cantillo in the back end of the rotation shrunk Carrasco's chances of a return to the Guardians. In a corresponding move, Myles Straw was selected from Triple-A Columbus.

Makes rehab start Friday
Carrasco (hip) began a rehab assignment Friday with Double-A Akron, covering three innings and striking out three while allowing two earned runs on three hits and no walks.
Impact
Carrasco tossed 41 pitches (27 strikes) in the outing, his first since he landed on the 15-day injured list Aug. 9 with a left hip strain. Though the Guardians wouldn't seem to have an opening in the rotation for Carrasco with rookie Joey Cantillo thriving of late as the club's new No. 5 starter in place of the injured Alex Cobb (finger), Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt told MLB.com on Sept. 3 that he still envisions Carrasco returning from the IL as an option to start. Carrasco is still expected to require at least one more rehab start in the minors before the Guardians activate him and make a decision on his role.

Closing in on live session
Guardians president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti said Sunday that Carrasco (hip) is scheduled to throw a live batting practice session by the middle of the week, Joe Noga...
Impact
Until Antonetti spoke to the media Sunday, the club hadn't provided many updates on Carrasco's status since he landed on the injured list Aug. 9 with a left hip strain. Based on Antonetti's comments, Carrasco was able to resume throwing within the past week, and the 37-year-old right-hander will continue the ramp up process when he faces hitters in the coming days. Alex Cobb (fingernail) is also scheduled for a live session later this week and appears on pace to beat Carrasco back from the IL, so the Guardians may not have room in the rotation for the latter pitcher once he's fully stretched out. Carrasco had posted a 5.64 ERA over 103.2 innings over his 21 starts this season prior to being shelved with the hip injury.

Out with hip strain
The Guardians placed Carrasco on the 15-day injured list Friday due to a left hip strain.
Impact
The 37-year-old presumably suffered the injury during his start against the Diamondbacks on Wednesday, during which he allowed four runs across 4.1 innings. Carrasaco will be eligible to be reinstated Aug. 23, but it's unclear how long he's expected to be sidelined.

Impact
After delivering a scoreless first inning, Carrasco allowed two runs in the second, including a leadoff homer to Josh Bell, before the Diamondbacks added on two more runs on Bell's second homer in the third. The 37-year-old Carrasco has dropped four of his last five starts while struggling to an 8.65 ERA in his last four outings. His ERA is up to 5.64 on the season with a 1.40 WHIP and 89:33 K:BB across 103.2 innings. Carrasco's currently lined up to face to Cubs at home early next week, though he could soon lose his spot in the rotation with Matthew Boyd (elbow) nearing a return.

Walks four in no-decision
Carrasco allowed a run on one hit and four walks over 4.1 innings in a no-decision Friday. He struck out five during the win over the Orioles.
Impact
Carrasco struggled with his command and failed to complete five innings to earn the win but he turned in a fine outing. After giving up a run in the second inning, he retired eight of the last nine batters he faced. He had taken a loss in his previous three starts, giving up a combined 13 runs in 14 innings during that stretch. On the year, Carrasco is 3-9 with a 5.53 ERA and an 84:31 K:BB through 99.1 innings. He's currently in line for a home matchup with the Diamondbacks next week.

Early exit in Philly
Carrasco (3-9) took the loss Saturday, coughing up six runs on six hits and a walk over 3.2 innings as the Guardians fell 8-0 to the Phillies. He struck out five.
Impact
The veteran right-hander put up goose eggs for three innings before the wheels came off in the fourth, beginning with a two-run homer by Bryce Harper. It was Carrasco's shortest outing since April 6, and he had given Cleveland at least five innings in seven straight starts coming into Saturday, although with less than stellar results. On the season, he sports a 5.68 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 79:27 K:BB through 95 innings. With the trade deadline looming, prospect Joey Cantillo getting a look Sunday and Matthew Boyd (elbow) getting stretched out in the minors, Carrasco's time in the rotation could be drawing to a close, but for now he's scheduled to make his next start at home next weekend against the Orioles.
