Takes first blown save Doval was charged with a blown save Sunday, allowing a run on two hits while striking out one over two-thirds of an inning.

Impact Doval allowed a runner inherited from Tyler Rogers to score in the eighth inning, and the Giants were unable to bounce back. A two-run double from Matt Carpenter also put a run on Doval's line. It's the first blown save of the season for Doval, who has also gone 1-2 with three saves through 11 appearances. He has a 3.27 ERA, but his 1.36 WHIP and 15:6 K:BB through 11 innings are at least somewhat concerning marks.

Doval was summoned from the bullpen and walked Lars Nootbaar to begin his outing, but he escaped the jam by getting Paul Goldschmidt to bounce into a game-ending double play. Doval's performance earned him his third save of the campaign, two of which have come over his past three appearances.

Stuck with tough loss in extras Doval (0-2) took the loss Friday as the Giants fell 7-5 to the Tigers in 11 innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on only one hit over 1.2 innings. He struck out three.

Impact The closer kept Detroit off the board in the bottom of the 10th inning, but when San Francisco grabbed a 5-4 lead in the top of the 11th, Doval remained on the mound. The right-hander watched second baseman David Villar make a poor decision on defense by trying to get the phantom runner at third base on a slow chopper to lead off the bottom of the frame, and after he struck out the next two batters -- which would have ended the game, had Villar taken the easy out at first base -- Nick Maton turned on a 96.8 mph fastball up in the zone and slugged a walkoff homer on Doval's 21st pitch of the night. He's got more losses than saves (one) right now and an ugly 6.35 ERA, but Doval's 33.3 percent strikeout rate through his first 5.2 innings suggest there's little cause for concern in the long run.

Likely to remain primary closer Giants president Farhan Zaidi said Jan. 12 that Doval will enter the 2023 season as the team's primary closer, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports.

Impact Doval overtook Jake McGee early last season as the Giants' preferred end-game option and ultimately finished the campaign earning 27 of the team's 39 saves while pitching to a 2.53 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 80:30 K:BB in 67.2 innings. San Francisco made a few cosmetic changes to its bullpen over the offseason, but the most notable of the new pickups -- Taylor Rogers -- lost hold of the closing role in San Diego in 2022 after a string of blown saves and will likely have to settle for setup duties to begin his tenure with the Giants. Though Gabe Kapler displayed some tendencies to take a committee approach to the closer's role earlier in his managerial career, Doval's performance in 2022 in addition to the lack of high-quality alternatives is probably enough to make the 25-year-old one of the more stable sources for saves heading into fantasy drafts.
