Set for season-ending UCL surgery Horton will undergo season-ending surgery on his right UCL, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Impact Horton had to be lifted from his last outing with what was initially described as a right forearm strain, but subsequent testing revealed the need to have his UCL repaired. Whether he needs a full Tommy John repair or a less invasive internal brace surgery won't be known until the operation is performed. Even if it's the latter, Horton will be shelved for all of 2026 and likely the beginning of the 2027 campaign, as well.

Impact Horton exited his last start and was subsequently placed on the 15-day injured list due to a right forearm strain. It sounds like the initial prognosis points to a long-term injury and perhaps surgery, but more will be known after the hurler gets a second opinion Tuesday. The Cubs have yet to announce who will take Horton's spot in the rotation Wednesday against the Rays, but Colin Rea is one candidate.

Impact The right-hander departed Friday's start against Cleveland due to forearm discomfort, and manager Craig Counsell announced after the game that an IL stint would be necessary. Horton has since been diagnosed with a strain, the severity of which is unclear. He'll be eligible to be reinstated April 19, but a longer absence wouldn't be surprising given the nature of the injury. Colin Rea is the likely candidate to step into the Cubs' starting rotation, but Javier Assad should also be in the mix.
