Cooper Criswell is expected to be activated from the COVID-19 injured list Friday to follow Bernardino. The 32-year-old Bernardino has a 3.79 ERA with a 40:17 K:BB in 40.1 big-league innings.

Rejoins big-league bullpen The Red Sox recalled Bernardino from Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.

Impact Bernardino was just sent down over the weekend but is back to absorb the roster spot of Cam Booser (elbow). The 32-year-old has pitched well for most of the season for the Red Sox but had struggled of late before being optioned with a 12.54 ERA over his last 12 appearances.

Returning to Worcester Bernardino is expected to be optioned to Triple-A Worcester on Monday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.

Impact Bernardino was called up from Triple-A on April 9, spending the last four months with the major-league roster, producing a 3.83 ERA and 1.43 WHIP with 40 strikeouts over 40 innings in 43 appearances with Boston. The 32-year-old will likely return to big-league roster down the road this season.

Impact Boston's bullpen wasted a quality start by Nick Pivetta, who authored six shutout innings. Bernardino, who entered the evening with a 1.69 ERA, came on with one out, a runner on and Boston leading, 1-0. He allowed a ground-rule double, an intentional walk, then was touched for a grand slam by Freddie Freeman. While it's been a very good season for Bernardino, the lefty has hit a rough patch, having allowed five runs, six hits and one walk over the last four outings (1.2 innings) while picking up two losses and two blown saves during that stretch.

Impact Bernardino permitted both inherited runners to score in the bottom of the eighth inning, allowing Miami to tie the game. The left-hander entered the game having prevented 15 of 17 inherited runners from scoring. Bernardino has been exceptional as a high-leverage reliever, but was unable to preserve the lead on this day. He has a 1.17 ERA and 1.17 WHIP over 30.2 innings.

Impact Bernardino, who was making his Grapefruit League debut, gave up a double to the first batter he faced then calmly got out of the inning unscathed. The left-hander bounced between Boston and Triple-A Worcester upon being claimed off waivers from Seattle in April, but held down a steady job in the bullpen from June through the end of the season. That included several outings as an opener. In all, Bernardino logged 55 appearances -- tied for second most behind Josh Winckowski -- and recorded a 3.41 ERA and 1.30 WHIP over 50.2 innings. He doesn't have overpowering stuff, but 2023 was a breakout season for the reliever, who appears to have a lock on a bullpen spot.
